43.0. "X-Country skitrip" by WRKSYS::BROWER () Tue Feb 11 1997 17:31

          Well I spent about an hour on America Online looking for
    X-Country ski info last night. The closest place with good conditions
    appears to be Temple Mountain in Peterborough. Their current conditions
    are loose granular on 15km of trails. They have rental equipment as well.
    Windblown is open ,they're in New Ipswhich, but their ski shop isn't
    open due to poor conditions. At present the best day of the week
    appears to be Sunday. So anyone interested in Feb 22 or March 2nd?
    I'm trying to talk a co-worker and her fiance into joining us due to
    them being experienced at x-country. They could help teach if lessons
    are unavailable on Sundays. Closer to home if we ever get snow is
    a place in Carlisle which has about 30km of trails. The name escapes me
    at present.. Carlisle would be mostr desireable due to it's closeness
    to most of us and proximity to good resteraunts.
          So first of any of the dates look appealing?? Well it's time to
    quit for the day

Well, you could be the sag wagon Joyce and drive from inn to inn. That
way you could do the chocolate thing and scoop up anyone that's had enough
of it on skis.  ;-)

43.6Day X-country trip Feb 24thWRKSYS::BROWERMon Feb 17 1997 14:129
           I'll be heading north with the kids for a day trip on Friday.
    From the looks of the longrange forecast we'll probably have to at
    least get to Waterville Valley for decent snow. Wished I'd taken today
    off.. Windblown is 100% open with 4-8" base and Temple Mt. seems to
    have very good conditions on their x-country trails. Anyone wishing to
    join us on Friday can send me email. Mother nature certainly is
    controlling our itinerary..

43.7Tentative plans for x-country skiing March 2ndWRKSYS::BROWERMon Feb 17 1997 15:497
          Oops suppose I should make a posting. There're tentative plans
    for a x-country skiing daytrip on March 2nd. I'll most likely be going
    to Waterville Valley on Friday so I'll get rate info while I'm there.

        Did your doctor recommend any isometric exercises?? Seriously knees
    often respond to some simple exercises... I do mine at my desk or while
    playing with my cats at home. With us runners it's often a slight
    misalignment of the kneecap which causes it to ride too high or low.
    When it does this it can be quite painful.

43.11Our itinerary tomorrow... WRKSYS::BROWERThu Feb 20 1997 23:1511
         Our itinerary tomorrow is Waterville Valley.. Will try to get as
    much info about other area as possible while up there. I'm told
    Waterville has nature tours on x-country skiis.. That's most definitely
    my cup of tea or coffee if you prefer ;-).. Will get rental info and
    see if there are lessons on Sundays. If not I'm up for teaching some
    basics... Now I just hope the reports of around 2-4' of snow still on
    the ground are accurate... Bobolini and his amigos signing off for tha
    day....

    bob
43.12Skiing was awesome can't wait for the 2ndWRKSYS::BROWERSun Feb 23 1997 13:0517
         I'll have no qualms whatsoever about driving up North again on the
    2nd. Waterville Valley had close to 4' of snow on the ground when we
    got there. Rates are reasonable for a trailpass it was $9 for 1/2 a
    weekday,, $11 for weekend. They do have rental equipment but silly me
    assumed the info for rentals was in the info packets.. Typically
    rentals run for $10-15 so it's not an overly expensive sport. My
    children loved it and were all very sore on Saturday.. We were very
    intrigued by a woman who was obviously training for x-country racing.
    She was literally skating up some pretty steep hills. Went by Jossy and
    I like we were going backwards...

         So if anyone is up for the 2nd I'm definitely game. I'll even
    drive up if someone is willing to do some of the driving on the way
    back. I figure some of us can meet in Leominster and pick up anyone
    else along the way??

          OOpps one more short note.. I'm no expert but I can teach well
    enough to get you started. Elora and Mike were doing intermediate
    trails by days end. There's a learning area that's pretty well suited
    to getting started.

43.15update on Ski tripWRKSYS::BROWERTue Feb 25 1997 16:1314
          Well we're up to three people going x-country skiing plus a
    possible 4th..

          Our plans are to leave the Leominster area around 9:00 Sunday
    morning. We'll likely try to hook up with Bill Lin in the Nashua area.
    Figure we'd hit the trails at about noon or so.

    Thus far it looks like Bill Lin, Karyn Woodward, possibly Julieanne
    Romero, and I will be going.

43.16X-country conditions are still okWRKSYS::BROWERThu Feb 27 1997 10:538
           Well I just got off of the Waterville Valley Website. They still
    have 18-30" of snow on their x-country trails. I'll be offsite tomorrow
    but will try to check in on my email when I get home. The plan weather
    permitting is to leave Leominster at 9:00. We'll be able to pick anyone
    up along the way or try to meet at a mutually convenient place. We'd
    likey arrive at Waterville Valley at around 11:30-12:00.

    So, Bob, where's a good place to meet up there? Any location you
    suggest will be just fine.

    I'll call you Sunday morning to see if we're still on. I have a
    feeling I'll be going whether the group goes or not. Would a call
    around 8:30 a.m. Sunday be too early? I'd like to leave early.

    If anyone wants a ride, I'd be happy to oblige. My most direct route
    is from Townsend Rt 13 to Rt 101 to Manchester then north. I can
    easily hit Nashua. I used to use ZKO as a convenient pickup point.
    One can safely leave a car there for the day.

    Cheers,

    there today and hopefully tomorrow. Sunday there's talk of rain but it
    may only be in the early morning. I'm still game.. We have 5 people
    planning on going. I'll be offsite until about 4:00 today. Will check
    my email before I leave. So if anyone else wishes to join us just send
    me email with you dtn or home phone so we can finalize arrangements.

    Had a great time at Waterville yesterday. The weather started as
    a light drizzle but quickly cleared as we headed off on the
    trails. Snow base and conditions were mostly good. There's still
    a couple of feet of snow on the hillsides though it was a bit thin
    and waterlogged near the base camp.

    Regretfully, of the five of us who were to go, only two of us made
    it back.

43.23Ski report from achey BobWRKSYS::BROWERMon Mar 03 1997 07:1818
           Bill and I got an excellent workout at Waterville Valley
    yesterday. As he said we arrived during a light shower which ligthened
    to drizzle after a quick lunch. We hit the trails at a bit before noon.
    Took a break after a bit over two hours of skiing then hit two more
    trails to round out the day. We skiied for around 3 hours. The high
    point of the day was 3/4 of the way up Criterion one of the advanced
    trails. We'd been skiing uphill for about 20 minutes?? when we reached
    a sign asking "Are you Enerobic yet?" Yes I was pretty close to
    anerobic and hurtin to boot.. Bill made it down Criterion without a
    hitch. I fell twice.. I'm still a bit awkward on x-country skiis..
    At one point down Criterion I just sat on my skiis ,hey I'm chicken it
    was pretty steep, lucky there weren't any exposed rocks or I be singing
    soprano today ;-).
          By days end it was partly cloudy and about 52 degrees. Conditions
    up there should hold for a few more weeks without new snow and beyond
    if they get more snow. Anyone willing to join in on another outing?

           bob

    >> .23 by WRKSYS::BROWER - awkward.. sat on skis.. chicken.. steep..
    >> rocks.. soprano...

    Bob's much too modest. He did great! And it wasn't all that steep.
    Let's not scare off anyone, Bob.

    The trails are all wide and well groomed. The customary twin ski
    tracks are not very distinct in many places, but one has no difficulty
    keeping one's skis pointed in the right direction. The wide smooth
    paths make the downslopes much easier. The skis are less likely to
    kick off in an awkward direction due to an inopportune bump or rut.

    Many of the die hards out there were "skaters." zip zip zip and
    they're gone.  Impressive to watch.

    Here's to the next trip. Hope more will join in.

    Cheers,

    I envy you heading to AZ... mi tierra, mi familia. Spoke with my folks
    there this week and they got pounded by a snow storm in Northern AZ
    which dropped a couple feet of snow in some places. I'm headin' Utah
    way on the 15th for some serious downhill powder. You'll be seeing me
    in the next Warren Miller film (the ones with people jumping off a 50ft
    cliff into 3 feet of fresh snow). In the meantime, I'm settling for
    the ice skiing at Killington this weekend. Not much snow on the
    trails there for X-country... but then again, maybe there is and I'm
    a bad judge of what's needed for X-country since I've never been.

43.38NH conditions as of Monday (3/10)DECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanWed Mar 12 1997 19:4516
I went to Attitash/Bear Peak on Sunday and Waterville Valley on Monday. Both for
downhill. The north country above Franconia Notch got about two feet of snow
last week. Bretton Woods might be a good x-c destination. I'm told it's very
good and the scenery is spectacular (at the base of the Mount Washington Hotel
overlooking Mount Washington).

Waterville got 6-10" of fresh powder on Monday. The downhill skiing was
incredible. I would expect that the x-country was also good.

I generally do x-country skiing when I don't have time to go downhill. If it
snows up north this weekend (it may snow or it may rain), I'll probably go
downhill skiing at Cannon.

-Jeff

    much fewer times than I did on my first time out. She's a
