38.0. "Pool Players" by PCBUOA::DEWITT (running on fire and dreams...) Wed Jan 29 1997 11:19

Since there seems to be a few of us interested in playing pool, we
    need our own note! :-)

you want to play some pool. Suggestions on where we can all meet are

Wednesday is out for me, since I'm playing in an 8-ball league
in Mendon MA. Actually, I run the league, which means it's
    	even harder to skip out.

I play in weekly 9-ball tournaments on Tuesdays, so I'd rather
    	not miss those either.

But M/TH/F would be great, and I've travelled as far as Chelms-
ford for a pool noters' get-together, so location is no prob-
lem. However, somewhere in MA would be preferable.

Thursday is out, for me - I have a yoga class.

Any other night. Next question is do we want a little place like
JJ O'Roukes, (shrewsbury) or a $10. an hour place like Boston Billiards
    (Worcester).

Myself, I prefer a little place that is cozier.

    Any other suggestions.

Well, if folks will have some patience with a novice I'd love to play pool.

Did you hear that JOyce, *Shawn* said he'd come to Chelmsford. ;-)

Actually the only places I know are the one near me and then 2 in Nashua.

Ah shucks, thanks Shawn, what a nice, sensitive guy!!

Will you still take it slow with me even if it's not my first time?

I have played a handful of times but could certainly use someone to show me
how...to play better.

I'd prefer sometime on a weekend, Friday evening, Saturday evening,
    Sunday daytime.

But don't let me restrict a more convenient time.

It sounds like some of the people expressing interest are quite
experienced players, and some are not. How about something like a
    mixed partners event.

I'm up for some. The only nights I couldn't make it would be

And somewhere near Worcester would be great, I'm out here
in the boonies... Whitinsville, which, if I think about it,
put's me farther north than Shawn. :^)

errr... What's wrong with Clinton. It's the only place left with
a real downtown. It has the Strand Movie Theater and that nice
old refurbished Nypro building. Also the walk around the reservoir. And
it's cheap to live in from what I understand. I even like the smell of
the Wheat-a-bix factory. And I hear the "Old Timers" restauraunt is
    superb.

Did a little research, I called this place in Westboro, called
Chaulkies Billiards, (I have never been there, I just wanted to check
    it out)
The man that answered the phone told me that during the day Noon - 6:00
you can have a table for $5. special rates.
After six the rates change to $7. for one person - $11. for 4 people,
BUT he said if we came in with a group of 10 he would give us a better
    deal.
Some of us locals could check out the place some afternoon, or after
work. Or a Weekend, to find out what it looks like.

Unless someone already knows the place.

Most places have ladies night specials, though only usually during
the weekdays, weekends are busier. If you call anyplace, ask them
    if they have any specials.

If going to the Worcester area, here are a few places I frequent and
    what they have to offer.

Example; Boston Billiards/Worcester has ladies night on Wednesday. .
25% off per lady present, 100% off if 4 ladies play, doesnt matter if
there are guys playing the table too. Big screen tv's, upstairs bar
that overlooks the pool area (refurbished industrial building), lite
food, small coin-op game area, sometimes has bands on thursdays (instant
stage: cover goes over 3 tables). If you go over the summer, they have
a lounge on the roof-top. Located at West Boyalston Street &
    Rt122 intersection. 508-852-2121

Jillians/Worcester has ladies night on Monday, they are 1/2$ off the
table if guys & girls are playing at same time. Tables surround a
raised floor bar which also has a casual table/sitting area. Game
area in rear of place has table tennis, air hockey, many misc. arcade
    games, (electronic) Darts...
    508-793-0900

Rack & Rythym, Grove Street (next to the North Works Restaurant).
Thursday is ladies night, 25% off per, Free if 4 play, anyone
extra not charged (men/woman). Refurbished factory building, serves
lite food, 2nd floor(where the pool tables are) has bar/dj dance floor,
seldom crowded, also has a few dart boards (bring your own), first floor
is their dance bar called "Rythym's", open only on weekends, has bands.
BTW, The North Works isnt too bad for casual dining before you play.
    R&R 508-831-7665

I went to the Mill City Brewery in Lowell a few weeks ago; A Restaurant
on the first floor; pool tables/ lounge/bar/darts/dj (dance floor) on
2d floor; 3rd floor has separate lounge area/bar with live music; arcade
    game area.

Yes Joyce, that is the same brewery [Mill City Brewery]. I was there
for the first time a few weeks ago on a saturday night. It didnt seem to
be that crowded. I cant vouch for the place other than by my first
impression, but it seemed ok. There has to be a simple way to get
there! It took awhile to find the place, then getting -out- of Lowell
was another story... [and yes, I did stop for directions]

"Which side of the river are we on???" ;-)

Yeah Daryll, I laughed when I read John's reply! I spent probably 15 minutes
going back and forth with Daryll and then the bartender about how to get home
from there last time! I know Lowell fairly well but couldn't figure out where
I was since we came at it from a different way AND happened to cross the river
without realizing it (a simple question like "so which side of the river are we
on???" turned into a major discussion!). ;-)

I'm glad to say I now know how to get there AND how to get home!

I can't do next weekend cause I'll be going skiing!!! Yeah! Though I'd love
to go back there AND play some pool (Shawn will you come up to Lowell, it's
right next to Chelmsford!? ;-) ).

Hey! Speak for yourself! ;-)

This has gotta beat last Valentine's night though - driving to dinner, arguing
with boyfriend, hitting ice (he was driving my car), spinning and then sliding
sideways across the road and 60' down an embankment into a bunch of pines trees,
crunch!, walking up the embankment (thankfully neither of us were hurt!) in a
red silk dress in a foot of snow, waiting for the Milford police who when they
got there told us it was Amherst, waiting for the Amherst police and so on and
so forth. And what thought was going through my head as we were sliding all
over the place and knowing how much money I'd just put into the car? "My car!!"
Yes, that was the demise of my beloved Supra. ;-( The worst thing was seeing
it up on the flat bed (I missed the winching it out part) with the whole driver
side smashed in and hearing the guy say it was probably totalled. Sniff, sniff.
Yes, now it's back to the world of car payments...(though it is nice to not have
to worry what's gonna break next - the Supra had 150k on it and to get more than
22 mpg)

Anyway, I digress...

I've had excellent luck with having my cars totalled at 150K+ miles,

True, B.B. may be crowded on a friday. When I've gone there (many,
many times) if the tables are full, we usually sat upstairs in the loft
bar and has a drink, waited for them to call our name. The bar
    overlooks the tables.

Next to B.B. is a decent chinese place. If you want to park and stay
put, there is Rack & Rythym (1/2 mile from B.B. on Grove Street).
Northworks Restaurant is next door (removated factory building block)
and has pretty good food. Walk outside, R&R is next door on the 2d floor,
bar & DJ with about 18/20 tables, downstairs is Rythyms, their club
which often has dance bands friday/saturday (I'd have to read the T&G
to see whats playing). Jillians is in between both places, but I'd
place it 3rd in a list being adjacent to WPI it tends to become a
college club on weekends. If you want a place with a catch-all menu,
    one-stop parking for food/pool/club/etc... I'd probably suggest R&R/
Northworks for a location. Directions are pretty simple if needed,
    even for Worcester!

     London Billiards
     70 James St
     Worcester
     (508)799-7665

They have one private room available, this is a two table, two TV
room which is $30.00/hr. The other room, which was not available
has one table and one TV for $18.00/hour.

They are open on Friday nights from 5:00pm to 2:00am.

     There is a bar.

They offer a "buffet" at $6.00/person which includes about 6 to 7
different appetizers, everything from a veggie platter to buffalo
        wings.

I've put my name in for the "big" room, just so that we would have

That'd be like asking if there's a smoke free bar...

If we get a private room, the only smoking will be from the
            people in the room.

Actually, last time I went to Londo Billiards, I don't remember it
being too smokey, I think they might not allow smoking in the
pool table area. The bar kinda sits up on a raised dias, or the
table area is in a sunken in area. Depends on your POV.

That baby was gonna take me to 200k!! At least!! Having it totalled was my
worst nightmare. Cause they don't take into account the fact that I'd just
had a $400 tuneup done or that it had gotten a new head gasket in the previous

I vote for dinner before pool. Then pool at the least busiest place.
John, do you think Rack and Rythems would be the candidate? In so
far as wages I definatly plan to play all the ladies for hugs...
The place that had a private room for $30. an hour with 2
tables might be something to consider. Divided up between if we
get 10 people would only cost a few bucks. We play for a couple
hours and hit a dance club and we could have the makings of a great

Its getting busy at work! We'er down a few folks today. Trying to catch
    up with notes & mail.

(.78) Tiano's is a great place, same block as Rack & Rythym &
Northworks (Grove Street) a bit classier than Northworks, has
a piano player, etc... In turn, a bit more more costly. More
like a special occasion type of place. Great food.

Myself - I dont smoke. Especially after getting over Bronchitus
this week, I'll appreciate the clean air! Count me in for dinner before
pool if anyone else wants to go. There are a couple of places near
London Billiards(James Street), though I've never eaten at them (I think
one is Italian and the other Greek). At Webster Square, there is
also a Japenese place called the Sakura Tokyo if you'd like to try
oriental cuisine. They also have a club there that usually has
dance bands over the weekend. The 'Pen' (Penitentiary) is adjacent
to London Billiards. I havent been top the Pen since it opened years
ago. (Joyce, is the music still strickly Country ?).

Rack & Rythym DOES NOT have a private room. It doesnt get busy there
until about 9pm. They do not have a band playing in their club (which
will be closed until March), just a DJ upstairs where the tables and
bar is. If anyone happens to call there, Frank is the owner, and he knows
its possible a group from DEC may call to reserve a table(s).
    Northworks is next door.

As mentioned, "Ralphs' ( Chadwick Square Diner") is a cool place. If
you've never been there, its a place to be 'experienced'. I dont
know what will be playing there the 14th, could be blues, alternative,
R&R, cutting edge, whatever.. its one of those places where all walks
of life attend. The decor is the interesting thing. between the barber
chairs, mounted animals, S&M dressed maniquens, motorcycles hanging
from the ceiling and 'bursting' through the walls (upstairs, its a
2-story club, the band plays upstairs too.) the coffin on the wall with
the hand coming out, various other odities, etc.. etc...

I think most places are $6-$8/hour per table plus $1 per person?
If we are going to eat and end the night dancing someplace, then
    we'll only be playing for a few hours (2-3?) ($60-$90). I wouldnt
mind a private room. We wouldnt have to contend with anyone around
us moving about, smoking, etc...) If we go to London Billiards,
I hear that Joyce is giving dance lessons at the 'Pen' later, wasnt
    that right Joyce? :^)

I would like to add my name to the list if we are going to Worcester.

Now to make this clear, this event is taking place on Valentines Day,
and what time would you be getting to the pool hall (which ever one
that may be) because I believe I may be going to dinner first with
someone, whom I may bring to this party.

I vote for Pool and Dancing.

Great Marianne - it will be taking place in Worcester, seems to be
the best choice for most (not Barb or Glenn).

    	I'd say pool from 7-9 or 7:30 - 9:30 might be a good timeframe...
    Dinner around 6ish I'd say - I get hungry early :-)

I called them today (R&R). There is no cover friday night. Again,
the club, Rythyms, downstairs, is closed/no band friday night.
There is a dance floor/DJ upstairs - same floor as the tables.
The crowd varies, could be busy, could be dead (the dance floor).
If its dead, we'll be able to plan where else we could go that night
or the Thursday before as a backup. The club schedule comes out in the
    T&G Thursdays.

    	- For Rack & Rythym there is no cover next Friday.
        - I think the tables are $6/hour. Frank would reserve a table
or several tables for us. The pool room is set up in two
rows. The left row has 4 tables, then the dart boards galley,
then 4 more tables, the right hand row has 10 tables. If
needed, we could get the 4(or lesser number) back left tables.
The owner, Frank, is an easy going guy. He always makes deals
for table time, keeps people coming back. After all, there are
three Major pool places (Jillians, R&R, B.B.) within .5 mile.
He said "Come on down, I'll take care of ya'"

    	- 'x' number of people are meeting for dinner before (including
myself). Did I hear 6pm? If so, any preferences where? Else,
we can meet at the NorthWorks Rest. which is in the same building
complex as R&R. (same parking lot across the street, everything
is within a few hundred feet.) If anyone needs directions to
R&R/Northworks (Grove Street) I'll provide that.

for talking to London Billiards - I'd say its safe to take your "dibs"

I would like to play partners and mix up teams every once in a while. This

Well here's a story for you all.

I was not suppose to go to dinner Friday, but plans changed at the last
minute and since the last note I read was a go, and I could never log
in again (being at home) I thought I would just show up at Northworks
and meet you guys anyway. Well, I waited until almost 7:00 and asked
about the reservations for JR and they said there was one person sitting
at the table - so I ask to be seated and I met Mike Murphy. We waited
until 7:30 and then ordered, of course by this time they wanted our
tables and broke the arrangement down to one table.

Mike would have sat there all alone if I hadn't showed up, right Mike?

I enjoyed the dinner, I hope Mike did, and then we played some pool.
I almost beat Mike, but we played 3 out of Five and he won.

What had happen was I was home, couldn't log in for the last message,
and Mike had left by 3:30, so had never got the message about the
cancelation, and apparently no one notified the restaurant to tell
anyone that showed up that it was canceled. Never saw anyone named
    John.

Hope we can have a few more people join us next time.

Mike and I came to the conclusion that since we got stood up, maybe we
should be taken out for a drink or two. :-)

Oh wow - I'm really sorry - but at least neither you nor Mike were
alone. When I hung up from the three way conversation with jr and
Barb, the last thing I knew jr was going to Northworks - guess he got
    sidetracked :-)

I'd say we (as in Barb, jr and I) owe you two drinks for sure -
but jr and Barb are the most guilty :-) :-) :-) :-)

Sorry I stood you up, but as I told Joyce earlier today, I was
on vacation last week and sick for most of it. I was going to
give Joyce and/or Barb a call Friday afternoon but I woke up at
about 5:30 and realized I'd forgotten to call.

I'll definitely plan on showing up at the rain date, and hope-
fully I'll be feeling better by then.

Yes - I DO appologize for for that! After the cancelation notices, I
got to talking with Joyce & Barb. (Barb. till 6:45!) I got sidetracked

to LKG (though when I last talked to Joyce, she knew me as 'heading
home'!!) Till next we meet, I'll owe you a few!
