| ENTP .... this was a LONG time ago, but only seems to be more true as I
re-read.
here's the list of characteristics that outline your primary concerns,
you'll have to put your own combinations together. There are four
categories, and you have 2 choices in each category. It's important to
do the whole test, because it's not all black and white, and while you
might score out as, say an introvert, your extrovert score may be very
close. Personally, I believe that at different times your personality
has different traits, for example, while at work I tend to be very
extroverted, when I'm at home, I tend to be much more introverted. I
test out as more intuitive than sensing, but only BARELY (by 3 pts).
It's fun, and seems to hold true .... at the end of each category, is
the percentages of the general population, that hold this trait.
Source of Energy: The traits that make you feel renewed/alive and

| My favorite was the one in the power plant. Guy sitting in front of
a huge wall mapped type of console. Flash to a city where all of the
lights start to go out. Flash to the console where alarms start
sounding.. The guy gets up and starts running. Comes to a door marked
authorized personnel or?? Walks in to find a very confused looking
cleaning lady. She had a bottle of bud in her hand. He takes the bottle
and places it on a tray which has an eerie light shining on it and
carefully rotates the label to the left. The camera then pans over to
a hamster on an exercise wheel. Seeing the bottle of bud it starts
running and suddenly the lights all come on :-) Too funny!!

Joyce is on the right track. It could be the heater core, but most
definitely its in the cooling system (radiator, heater core,
waterpump, hoses).
Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator? Is there any
coolant leaking, look for puddle of antifreeze under your car where it
is parked.
You should find out what's wrong quickly, because if you are driving
the car with the coolant level low or empty, you run the risk of futher
damage to the engine.

| cj,
How long has it been since your coolant has been replaced. I'm
still guessing that barring a leak, your thermostat is stuck
open. If the system isn't leaking and the coolant level is ok,
that is the absolute first place to go to. It's a cheap and easy
fix. If your heater core were going, it would be leaking and in
many cases, the leak would be inside the car. If your coolant
level was drastically low, you'd be overheating as well, even in
this weather.

Yeah, but with her commute, even with the thermo stuck open, she'd
eventually get SOME heat.
I vote for either the thermo stuck closed (still only $5.00 part, and
probably $20.00 labor), or an ice block in the cooling system.
Do you have a temperature gauge? Is it running any hotter than normal.
I agree that the core seems unlikely. When I had a leaky core, and
turned the heat on, the car would fill up with white smoke. You just
KNEW that that had to be good for you.
The car's only a couple years old, right? Whether coolant's been
changed or not shouldn't be an issue yet.
Or there's "no" coolant in the car at all.....
The radiator/cooling system is filled with coolant, which is used to
cool the engine. The thermostat closes and remains closed until the
car reaches an appropriate (hot) temperature. Frequently around 180
degrees. Once the thermostat open, the coolant is then free to travel
to your heater core. Your fan blows across the heater core, thus
pushing hot air into your car. The circulation completes back to your
radiator, and continues to try to cool the engine from the fan by your
radiator switching on/off to keep the coolant the right temperature.
If the thermo is stuck open, the engine will take a *LONG* *LONG* time
to reach the correct operating temperature, and your heat will take a
long time to come on, and may not be as hot as normal. Your car may
tend to run cooler than normal. If it's stuck closed, then the thermo
will never open, and never allow the hot water to travel to the heater
core, so you will NEVER get any heat inside the car. If you have a
blockage in the pipes going to the heater core, it's the same as the
thermo being stuck closed.
If there's insufficient fluid in the system, the whole thing simply
doesn't work well because you don't develop the right pressure to be
able to flow the water properly. You'd most likely notice that your
heat is working less and less well over time. This would hold true of
a "leak" anywhere in the cooling system.
If you lost a hose, or had total coolant failure, in this weather, you'd
probably get ~15-20 mins of ~40mph driving before the engine would start
rattling so much you'd stop in a cloud of smoke.
Since CJ is driving 1+ hours/day, I would expect that ~1/2 hour into
the drive she'd start to feel some heat, but probably wouldn't be
impressed, if it were stuck open. So, IMO, you either have a thermo
stuck closed, or a block of ice. BTW - The ice would only happen if
you had less than ~30%coolant to 70%water mixture. Or went to Alaska
(-: If you're not sure, you can buy a "bulb" thing, that will 'read'
the mixture (and effectiveness??) of your coolant.
Good Luck!
-Patty
And that's your car cooling system lesson for today (-:

van this fall.. The core was fun NOT! but doable and I bet I saved a
bundle on labor. A stat only runs $2-5 depending on where you go and is
a 10-15 minute job. There's also a possibility that you have a valve on
your heater line. I'm not sure if Celebrity's have them or not. If this
stuck shut you'd likely never get any warmth though. I charge $20/hr if
you get stuck ;-}

I THINK I have this right - (a '94 4-cyl cavalier wagon??)
VIP (883-8477) $27.00/labor, $4.99/thermo, $1.00/gasket, $5.00/antifreeze
Or they'll re-use your old antifreeze, and knock off $5.00)
Pep Boys (598-6600) $30.00-40.00/labor $6.99/thermo $1.00/gasket
$6.00/anti-freeze
MacMulkin (888-1121) $65.00/parts+labor and reuse your antifreeze,
or ~$78.00/parts+labor and flush your entire system, all new

Amazing how fast a $5.00 part can add up!!! VIP and PepBoys both work

I had a similar thing happen to my Toyota. It wasn't the thermostat
as I had hoped since the car eventually came up to temperature and
the heat still didn't work. What it turned out to be was the control
unit on my dash. I had electronic temp control and it would determine
if it should open up the valve which allowed coolant into the heater
core. The control burnt out and cost me about $300 to replace. You
may just have a vacuum swith over and the hose might have come off or
the vacuum valve may have gone. This is what it sounds like to me.
Been reading these notes and finally decided to chime in.

Yes, Daryll, they're so bad that I have all 3 of their albums.
8^)
The 90's is about change, I think, and they're just another band
that's trying to do something "different". I mean, Alice Cooper
and KISS have already done the makeup thing, and Nine Inch Nails
[Trent Reznor, producer of Marilyn Manson's albums] has done the
industrial thing ... but these guys combined the 2.
There's some good stuff to be found on the albums. They're quite
heavy, and not family-oriented in terms of subject matter and
language, but they're good to head-bang to occasionally.
Heavy metal isn't all I listen to ... I have a VERY broad range
of musical tastes, and will give anything a chance [although rap
is pretty much crap to me]. The HEAVY_METAL noters give me a
hard time about listening to Air Supply, but it doesn't mean I'm
going to let it bother me.

"Different" doesn't have to mean unique or original. It means that
they are "different" from the majority of the bands out there. And
that they are.

| Daryll sent me some of their lyrics...and though I did find
a lot of it offensive...I did not see anything to incite
an actual protest. But then, I don't know anything more
about them than that. I do not know their politics and if
they are otherwise being abusive. I suspect they are going
by Daryll's note in here.
If they were spewing things, like "kill all (*insert a totally
offensive word of prejudice here*), I could understand the
protest. Similar to the problems some of the rap songs have
encountered. Those like the one inciting cop killing, etc..
They do use very offensive words, but I don't see that they
are saying to kill that particular group of people. Rather
they seem to hate the haters.
Again, I suspect from Daryll's response in here, that perhaps
they do have lyrics or on stage suggestions along that line.
To glamorize anything concerning anything Nazi is totally
offensive to me and many others. THAT is cause for protest.
One would hope some generation would learn from those before
it and finally rid us of this whole Nazi thing. Why do they
perpetuate? They should come up with a drug to quell prejudice
much like those that treat depression.

I doubt that Marilyn Manson is trying to "recruit" disciples for
their upcoming attempt at the domination of the planet. I think
they're a band trying something relatively different to try and
please music lovers, and maybe even make some money at the same
time.
Somewhat related, do you know how Ozzy Osbourne became known as
a "devil worshipper"? At a concert long ago, an audience member
threw something to him ... I believe it WAS a bat, but possibly
not live. And he bit the head off [probably drunk+ at the time].
So word-of-mouth being what it was, soon he was performing animal

| Marilyn Manson... well... *he* is the lead singer for an alternative
band who does some pretty wacked out stuff. It's been a while but I
think the names in the band are based on serial killers (I may be
wrong) and have albums like "Anti-Christ Superstar". They've done some
odd stuff and a lot of shock-therapy stuff IMO, such as a song called
Cake and Sodomy ".... white trash get down on your knees, it's time for
cake and sodomy........." and goes downhill from there.
I know of this group because of their association (discovered by,
promoted by) with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, a band I very much
enjoy (saw em a while ago with Bowie *happy sigh*). Their 'music'
style and shock/offensive lyrics are all the rage with many people. I
don't mind hearing them when I go out but I prefer better groups when I
hit the alternative nightclubs.
As for the Makarena (sp?), pardon me while I spit my breakfast up on

would pay money for 5 minutes with the thing that created it.

However insipid I might believe it to be, though, it does allow
some folks to get up and dance, and enjoy themselves in a way that

the Boston Pops, or line dancing... things that are not necessarily

25.232 | one little music tirade.... | TBC001::DROVER | HEDGEHOG | Mon Feb 24 1997 11:03 | 47 |
| I should have read the whole thing before I replied. It's old news
already, get over it! There's worse stuff out there... a lot worse, and
a lot better. And they do a version of Sweet Dreams I kinda like. As
for the makeup, dress whatever... it's all a gimmick... if it sells
then thats what people want to buy.
Anyone out there remember GWAR? Trust me, it gets much much worse. I
personally think Nine Inch Nails is better, but I have the album "Portrait
of an American Family" and it's alright. But if you have old-school
stuck up points of view then keep your nose in the air and ignore it
because most new groups today will get that nose out of joint.
That was the nicest way I could put that. There is a lot of music out
there I don't like, but it is a preference. I do not believe I have the
right to tell others what they should and shouldn't listen to. Here in
Toronto, our city has actually harassed prime time performers because
of their act. I think Madonna was the last one to be given a hard time.
Personally speaking, if someone wants to rent a hall and play their
stuff, whether it be good music or offensive drivel, let 'em play.
It's times like this when I start to rant and rave that the song
"Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine comes to mind.
:-)
Between Kevin (my roomie) and I, we have near 900 cds and countless
records and tapes. It's isn't all classical and jazz :-).
And as for originality, who cares? If it sounds good and you like it,
have a party. You know, when I was on the floor at the NIN concert, I
don't recall thinking "oh my... I don't think this is all that
original, it's been done before" or "oh my, this music, these lyrics
are offensive" NO! I rocked, we partied, and had a good damn time!
Music is defined by the individual. *Be* an individual and not a
lemming and listen to what pleases you. And when others attempt to
censor one person for what they say/do on a stage then speak up for it.
Even if you don't like it.
*That* was the most low key tirade I have ever launched on the subject.
And I do apologize for running (diving?) off on one of my little
tangents.

Rage Against the Machine ... that's a great band. At least, their
1st album was great. The 2nd just sort of dragged, IMO.
And BTW, the "protest" was nothing at the Marilyn Manson show. A-
bout 25 people showed up and "prayed for the souls of the concert-
goers" and tried to hand out pamphlets. The newspaper said that
the press outnumbered the "protesters".
|
25.236 | Meandering thoughts... | TBC001::DROVER | HEDGEHOG | Mon Feb 24 1997 12:03 | 58 |
| I agree. The holocaust was a blight on humanity that must never be
forgotten. But to be quite frank, many many bands out there (and plain
ol people) leech onto a public disgrace for the shock value. The only
way to fight it is to ignore it. Without attention it will die on its
own. ALthough it did not register at first (I've never seen them live)
that MM dressed like a Nazi. After reading your reply, I regret the
intensity of my response.
One thing however, I do recall something a good friend of mine said to
me. Ylana said she hated these people who venerated people like Hitler
and others. But in their pathetic attempt at recognition, they keep the
memory alive. Marilyn Manson will come and go. Others like him have
come and gone and will hit the scene again. But when Manson will be
forgotten, the things that happened in WW2 will not be. This is not
only true of the Holocaust but of many other things.
I apologize if my freedom of expression message offended anyone. But
the facts remain that some people for lack of originality or the need
to be anti-establisment make idols of the evils of our history. It's up
to us as the public to make these people fade from the scene faster.
Manson is hot now... but he will run his course and be forgotten.
The tough part is when people like me hear the music but have no visual
of the person performing it. I don't watch tv or read rags and know
what I know of them from a book I bought about NIN.
The scary part about music today is, I don't wanna see/know about the
people putting out music today. They look odd to me, they say dumb
things (something I've done more than once), and they suck in person.
Anyone who has heard Ozzy give a radio interview recently knows what I
mean. All I could think was "shut up Ozzy and scream out another
tune..."
Bottom line is: Many things said today are offensive. But where do we
draw the line of freedom of expression? It's an odd line... we have a
chap here in Canada, Ernst Zundel who has been censored for spreading
hate literature. And I think they did the right thing. He believes the
lies and drivel he spouts and tries to make other people recreate the
very atrocity he claims never happened. He should be shot. BUT. What
about Manson? He is riding a sore spot and offending people to make
money.
I do not think I am adequately conveying what I think/feel on the
matter. Indeed, it could start another entire conference. Suffice it to
say for me personally I as an individual do find any act that promotes
any form of hatred toward another offensive.
I just want to be happy and party when I can, and fight when I have to.
ANd one of the horrible realities of today's society is that sometimes
the best way to fight something is to ignore it and let it die of
attention starvation.
James

have written about WW2 history. The Holocaust DID happen and must not
be forgotten...but it has: Cambodia, Rowanda, Iraq, Bosnia... Need I
go on? These were people too. As with the Jews, the world stood by and
did nothing.

Steve - you took my note the wrong way. The point I was trying to make
was that Schindler's List is a *powerful* reminder, and its done in a
positive way and it leaves a very strong reminder as opposed to when
people glorify Nazi's - to me that's mocking the Holocaust.

| Today we have a different term for mass murder and genocide. Because
our respective governments are often not politically motivated to act
as often as they should they call it an internal affair. Or what's the
other term: "ethnic cleansing".
Murder, especially murder motivated by race, religion, gender, or
anything is still an abomination of our people.
Like I said... very volatile, emotional, and all around sensitive

| RE.243
Steve,
Well I checked out the name analysis..and I'll have to admit,
for Cindy it was really accurate. Ok, too accurate for a
skeptic like me ;-> They really grabbed me when they got right
to the troublesome head, throat, dizziness/fainting thing.
So...I called for the free extended analysis. WOW! I tell you
I have hemmed and hawed about ever entering an ad in singles. I
just don't know how the heck to describe myself, especially at
this time. And frankly, I'm chickensh**. These folks could write
it for me! She even came up with the fact I actually have a shy
side that I keep so covered many would be surprised to know it's
there. (guilty as charged!)
Naturally, they then try to sell you on the 30 page write up for
$39.00, which I declined. But it really was amazing what they
said. She was even a bit confused about my being single because
she had "seen" (and I'm not talking psychic here) a change in my
family status that had made me more practical. I hadn't told her
I was a single parent.
So am I a believer??? I don't know that there is something to
believe or not here...but I was truly amazed. I feel a lot of
the psychic's and palm readers and such, pretty much give you
answers that are ambiguous and you could make fit to your life
or even someone else's.
This analysis thing was right on the money and didn't miss much
at all.
Oh well, a nice break in a busy day...

Joyce
The name of Joyce has created a friendly, congenial nature, with the desire
to associate and have friendship and understanding. You appreciate taking
part in activities involving others, either socially or in the business world.
Peaceful and settled conditions appeal to you and you are naturally
desirous of having your own home and raising a family. You appreciate the
security of the home, where your life could follow a definite pattern,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
pretty much true...
and where you would not have to make major decisions. You prefer to rely
on the ability of others in this respect as you find it difficult to take a
definite stand on situations that arise, partly because of lack of
confidence, and also because you dislike issues as they create dissension
between people. Procrastination is a weakness of your nature, causing an
inability always to complete your plans.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
this is way off - like totally in left field...
Your name has made it difficult for you to concentrate on things for long.
You desire to see a concept completely presented in a detailed way
before you can understand it, and if you cannot understand it, you come to
your own conclusion and often fail to listen to and reason out another's
point of view. You resist being forced into a change and could become almost
impervious to new ideas.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
sorta true here and there :-)
You desire refinement, understanding, and
appreciation, yet sometimes your outward attitude does not reveal your
innermost feelings, and thus you have never felt truly understood. Your
name has given you a desire for heavy and rich foods, such as meat, potatoes,
and chocolates, which in turn create mucus in the bloodstream, causing the
blood to be sluggish; this condition affects the area of the stomach
and you could suffer with constipation or other stomach and intestinal
disorders.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
well the meat, potatoes and chocolate part is right :-)

just be what makes it art. I really enjoy their "pretty people"

BTW, if anyone local to the MRO area wants to hear Marilyn Manson
stuff, let me know and I'll drive my Duster to work and give you a
ride [and give your ears a workout].
Also BTW, the new album is basically crap [IMO]. "Portrait of an
American Family" is the best. "Smells Like Children" is OK [and
contains the cover of "Sweet Dreams", which did grow on me after a
few listens], but contains several different versions of "Cake an
Sodomy" ... maybe they ran out of material and went for the "Hey,
let's see how many different musical styles we can use for this 1
song" mentality.

That's just fine, cj. There's nothing wrong with doing that from a
technical standpoint. Your IS people may have other thoughts with
respect to keeping the system on. If they configured the machine
to use power management fully, there should be minimal savings,
especially over a 24 hour period the savings during your working hours
can easily cover the minimal power drain during off-hours.
Cheers,

| I don't turn my Celebris off unless I'm going on vacation or am going
to be away for several days.... this is for two reasons. First, I have
SWEEP scheduled to run at 1 in the morning because and because there
are a couple of managers who use my system after hours to print out color
slides, etc. It's interesting because just yesterday I spotted a new
poster around the facility reminding everyone to "log off and shut off"
all computers every night..... oh well, so much for being in
compliance!
I've also heard and been told by those more in the know than I, that
it's actually better for the computer not to shut it off every night...
so who do you listen to these days?!?!?!?

| I didn't see any direct answer to cj's question about shutting her
system down. It's most likely because your disk(s) and others in your
group are networked, perhaps with a server machine somewhere as well.
Your files and the files of others in your group could be spread
anywhere around the network, so you'll clog up the works if you power
yours down. Your system support people may also access your disk after
hours, for backup, virus scanning, or whatever. If they feel like it,
they can also scan for unlicensed software, but this they can do
anytime at all.

|
It doesn't matter if a computer is on or off ... if your files
are stored on a local server [as in Windows NT] then anyone with
the proper privileges can access those files. The files aren't
really stored on your specific machine ... your machine has the
proper privileges to access them from their current location.
I just got RAS installed on my laptop yesterday, and this means
that I can dial in and connect to my local server [Materials
group, user SLAB] and access files regardless of the status of my
PC at work.
Remember that a server set-up is employed so that backups can be
done on a regular basis by a central IC/CS group/person. And it
wouldn't make sense for all computers to have to be turned on so
that the backups can be done.
The only files that aren't accessible are C-drive files ... that
is, the files on the hard drives on the PC's.
|
25.280 | | DANGER::ARRIGHI | and miles to go before I sleep | Fri Feb 28 1997 16:09 | 5 |
| I didn't think I had said anything that you contradicted. When your
local machine is off, your local files can't be used -- C drive, or
whatever number of drives you have locally. Files CAN be stored
locally, and other people with privilegess can use them with a network
file system.

25.284 | Cold feet and good wine | TBC001::DROVER | HEDGEHOG | Mon Mar 03 1997 11:02 | 48 |
| Last night I found myself having seriously cold feet. So I trundled
down to the bar and opened a bottle of port and just sat there sipping
alone there and thinking. I guess I had been thinking about the good
times with other people, some of whom would be willing to go back out
and get serious again. But the more I remembered what their good points
were, I also remembered what the reasons were that it didn't/couldn't
work. Then I realized all the things I loved in other people were all
present in the lady I am with now with almost none of the negative
things. And no matter how I chop it up, she's still the best thing that
ever happened. I wonder if I am a victim of the "if it seems to good to
be true, it probably isn't" mentality. Then it struck me that I hadn't
really thought about the fact that it was the first time in a long long
time I had thought about those people. In fact, the more time I spend
with Mrs. Right, the less time I spend dwelling on the past and the
more time I spend looking to the future.
Does anyone know the song "Sensible Shoes" by David Lee Roth? It
certainly comes to mind. Only this time the guy doesn't walk away from
the best thing that happened.
So I called her up last night just to tell her how happy I was and how
much I loved her and couldn't wait for May. When she asked me what was
on my mind (Women seem to know when something is/was bothering you -
because it's not like I don't tell her this everyday) I told her what
was on my mind and we chatted away until I fell asleep on the couch.
Two sips of port and and hour or so of dreaming out loud will cure
anyone I guess.
Forgive me all.. I had to write this somewhere and just get it all out.
I'd never had 'cold feet' before. I'm told it's normal but it is
certainly not like me to get indecisive. I've gone to the wall for
things I was a whole lot less passionate about. It's been kind of a
prideful point for me. Knowing what I want, being determined, seeing
things through... this is me. AT least I thought so. I'm not worried
really. I *KNOW* where I'll be on my wedding day, that I think was
never really ever in doubt. But the fact that someone got inside and
under my skin so completely and subtley that I didn't know... and the
knowledge that I am still just a big ol vulnerable kid is very
unsettling. I'm nervous, happy, a bit crazy, and scared just a little
bit. And I love every second of it.
Does this make sense??
Ahhh don't mind me... all I did was waste lots of text and some rather
excellent wine.

ever complained of mistreatment in any way. As if I wasn't nervous enough

divorce most of these people after getting to know me couldn't figure
what her problem was.. Least it didn't get me cement overshoes :-}

25.291 | even crossing to paradise includes some loss! | SSPADE::HILDE | | Tue Mar 04 1997 16:16 | 32 |
|
(I'm back!...after a brief regression into my hermitage (sigh). Between
traveling, flu, hobbies, work, and old habits, I sort of disappeared for
a while...oh, well.)
James,
I just have to comment. It's better to have doubts than not. As some have
already said, better to go in with eyes open then blindly with nothing but
hopes and dreams. But there may be something else here as well...changing
always means leaving something and leaving something always means feeling
some loss. No matter how positive the change...it's still a change...and us
humans, unfortunately, seem to inately resist change...seem to hold on a bit
to the "old" and familiar.
There's a tarot card of a family in a boat crossing a river. The water is a
bit rough. They are hoping that they are crossing to a land of "milk and
honey"...and they may indeed be doing just that. The point is, you never
know for sure and you can't take all that you had and are with you. You
have to leave some stuff behind and you have to take some risks. There's
just no other way.
Your doubts are even more than natural...they are also an opportunity to
reaffirm your decision (which you have already done :-) ) and to reflect on
what you are leaving/changing...to say goodbye...to embrace the risk and the
loss as well as the hopes and dreams and positives. I forget where I read
it but...transitions no matter how positive are never entirely comfortable
and always offer opportunities for reflections and insight.

Lon

| Hi,
I'm outta here again for a few days... I'm going to be helping out on
my friend's farm making maple syrup.. so it really can't be considered
a vacation...
They use draft horses (and occasionally a tractor) to pull a sleigh
around to collect the sap and then boil down the sap in the sugar
house..
I used to complain about how expensive "real" maple syrup was.. now
that I know what it takes to make it, I don't think peole charge
enough.. (-;

25.296 | heard some ... through the grapevine | WRKSYS::BROWER | | Mon Mar 10 1997 09:22 | 20 |
| I've heard kinda through the grapevine that there's a perception
that some of us regulars are a bunch of wild party animals.. From
reading some of the notes in here I guess I could see where some people
might get that impression. In actuality a lot of us were in a position
of being bored of hanging around on the homefront... Yet were also
nervous about going to clubs, pool halls, dinner, etc alone. The
current group of people that go out regularly creates a sort of safe
zone at events they attend. They're certainly not a rowdy buch and
speaking as a person who's been a wallflower most of his life... They
make me feel downright comfortable and welcome. Even my kids after
meeting some of them at the Border are very anxious to go to family or
other events.. As they put it they're a cool bunch of people.. My kids
are failry shy too so it was a thrill for me to hear them so excited
about rafting and camping with some of the SCHAT folks. So for those
that may be hesitant about attending activities because they think
we're a wild bunch.. Rest assured we're not. It's simply a safe way to
go out and socialize..

It's very easy to aquire the "Party Animal" monicker. Many
years ago, when I was a social director in other notesfiles
(WhoAreYou, Friends, early Singles, etc...), I got branded
a "Party Animal".
The branding usually came from quiet, reserved people who
yearned to have the fun I was having (and am still having
at 35). I felt bad because I used to be, and sometimes still
can be, quiet and reserved. I was the painfully shy person
in high school. You'd never think that now.
So, to the quiet, reserved people out there who yearn to
have fun, and don't like the bar scenes and stuff, GET
OUT THERE. It takes a while, it's uncomfortable at first,
but before you know it, you're wondering why you are
being called a Party Animal just because you like to get
out and dance.

I tend to be either (or both), with no in between, and without a lot

able to put aside. I know my stomach goes into knots big time
meeting new people, but I just try to ignore it and trudge on.
Your feelings for a person, too, can make a difference. I mean,
I can talk every day to somebody and be fine...but should an
"attraction" develop, then I become shy, stupid, tongue-tied (yes,
even I ;-> ).
But I think the group is great. I like that we continue to get
together with an atmosphere of friends. It's been asked of me,
"Doesn't it get territorial?". Well, I don't think so. I like
that it isn't a "let's see who winds up with who" atmosphere. It's

Exchange is a mail system, it's not a replacement for VMS. You
can't get to NOTES from Exchange.
However, if they take VMS away from you completely, NOTES is a-
vailable via the WWW, using the following format:
http://www-notes.lkg.dec.com/node/conference/
at least for the time being.

I actually did and didn't luck out on the shovelling thing. I
had help, my neighbor came over with his snowblower. But the
(older) guy across the street never came out and did his. Now,
the past two winters he's come over with his snowblower whenever
he's been well enough and plowed me out. He was not able to do
his yesterday. So I asked my friend to go over there with me and
shovel him out and he agreed to do that. (He wound up doing a

I was very confused, seeing how they managed to only close the

It was my understanding that if there was a state of emergency

| Gee, I couldn't decide if this made me smile or complain so I
wound up here.
Today I went to deposit the support check for Angeline, and
could not find it anywhere! Panic set in (I saw my night tomorrow
night going down the tubes fast because I'd need to take tomorrow's
funds to pay the sitter today). I don't know if her (Angeline's
father) is home this weekend or not (he's working in New York). So
I placed a panic stricken message on his answering machine.
Tonight, I'm supposed to go over one of my fav nephews house to see
how handsome he is before he leaves for his senior prom.
Angeline's father just called me from Springfield, MA on his way
home from New York. He wanted to come up and see Angeline tonight
and offered to take us out to dinner. He had NOT gotten my message,
hadn't called home. This was just a coincidence he called!
Well, dilema--I have to see David to get the money, but really wanted
to see my nephew, but hey - we're talking a dinner out too!.... Timing
wouldn't allow both, so I wound up agreeing to go to dinner.
Don't know if I'm glad or not! :-( :-)
Guess I'll have a better idea when my belly's full on David's tab ;->

| Hi,
This is a combination of a grumble and me pleading for help... (-;
I have an appliance dilemma... first the grumble:
I bought new appliances when I moved into the duplex, now I'm moving
out and have to move the appliances... I tried to sell them but found
that they aren't even worth a 1/3 of what I paid for them....
Never buy new appliances unless they are going to be a part of the
household for 25-30 years...
now the dilemma:
I need to move the washer, dryer, and small refrigerator out my
apartment by Sunday at 8:00pm... I will rent a uhaul and a moving
dolly type thing, but need some help moving the appliances...
If those of you in the Nashua area could donate sometime Saturday
morning to help me, I would GREATLY appreciate it... the appliances
are going from Nashua to Billerica...
thanks...

25.476 | the weekend's events! | DANGER::ASKETH | Beware of Greeks bearing gifts... | Mon May 05 1997 09:06 | 29 |
| Well, it was quite the chat event weekend!
Kathleen, CJ and I did the SM dinner Friday night. After CJ left for points
south, Bruce and Dave got there and we spent the rest of the night talking
about CJ. ;-) Charley Dee's was great as usual. Bruce and I even made
our own dance floor.
Then Sat morning was bike trek #2. My first time on a mountain bike! I
WANT ONE!!! I'd borrowed my sister's bike which was less than optimal but
still fun. Dave, Bill, Ron and I hit the trails in Mine's Falls Park in
Nashua for awhile and then headed back to Dave's house so I could switch
to my road bike. We then went *back* to Mine's Falls to hit the paved trails.
Did that for awhile and decided we needed more adventure so we headed west
on 111 and paid CJ a visit. ;-) After that we headed back instead of our
original plan of more riding cause the storm appears to be getting closer and
closer. I think it was around noon when the adventure ended (no, we didn't
get caught in the storm!). I even got some yard work in when I got home.
And, yes, Sat night was Terry's bash. Great party house Terry! ;-) Great
party too! I couldn't sing at rehearsal last night - I was still too out of
breath from the great "blow ping pong" match. ;-) Barb, Dave and Ron rule!!
(not sure I want to see those pictures!) Pool, darts, normal ping pong, the
labyrinth (I got up to 44 btw!), the cartridge in a bare tree...fun night!!
Hey Ed, oops I mean Glenn ;-) , where were you?? We missed you, and others
that didn't make it.
Great weekend!! (even our set move in yesterday went well!)

My cheeks STILL hurt from Blow Pong :-)
Actually, I think I INHALED one!
Darn right Barb, our team ruled!!! Wait, is this an
event we should really be proud of??? :-)
I reserve my opinion till I see the pictures.
What do ya think all, can we work our way up to Blow Darts, Blow Pool
and maybe even Blow Tennis???? hehe
Barb, Dave and Bill...had a blast biking!!!! Mines Falls is a kewl
place. Felt great to get exercise in the brisk fresh air.
Perfect timing, I too made it home just in time to do some yard
work. Started raining 10min after I finished spreading fertilizer.
Sunday, my dandylions exploded into full bloom.
Cheers!

Say, Joyce, you were last in here "last night" and first in again this
morning. You must not have slept much. Dinner and play too much
excitement for one day? ;-)
Love to all,

A Floydian analysis
of 'The Wizard of Oz'
By HELEN KENNEDY
Daily News Staff Writer
Call it Dark Side of the Rainbow. Classic
rockers are buzzing about the amazingly weird
connections that leap off the screen when you play
Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" as the
soundtrack to "The Wizard of Oz."
It sounds wacky, but there really is a bizarre
synchronization there. The lyrics and music join in
cosmic synch with the action, forming dozens upon
dozens of startling coincidences the kind that
make you go "Oh wow, man" even if you haven't
been near a bong in 20 years.
Consider these examples: Floyd sings "the lunatic is
on the grass" just as the Scarecrow begins his floppy
jig near a green lawn. The line "got to keep the
loonies on the path" comes just before Dorothy and
the Scarecrow start traipsing down the Yellow Brick
Road.
When deejay George Taylor Morris at WZLX-FM
in Boston first mentioned the phenom on the air six
weeks ago, he touched off a frenzy.
"The phones just blew off the wall. It started on a
Friday, and that first weekend you couldn't get a
copy of 'TheWizard of Oz' anywhere in Boston," he
said. "People were staying home to check it out."
It's fun, he said, because everyone knows the
movie, and the album which spent a
record-busting 591 straight weeks on the Billboard
charts can be found in practically every record
collection.
Dave Herman at WNEW-FM in New York
mentioned the buzz a few weeks ago. The response
more than 2,000 letters was the biggest ever
in the deejay's 25-year on-air career.
"It has been just unbelievable," said WNEW
program director Mark Chernoff. "I've never seen
anything like this. "
The station plans to show the movie using the album
as soundtrack at a small private screening tomorrow.
Rock fans always have loved to speculate about
hidden messages in their favorite albums. But seeking
connections between the beloved 1939 classic kid
flick and the legendary 1973 acid-rock album pushes
the envelope of the music conspiracy genre.
Nobody from the publicity-shy band would
comment, but Morris asked keyboardist Richard
Wright about it on the air last month. He looked
flummoxed and said he'd never heard of any
intentional connections between the movie and the
album.
But the fans aren't convinced it's just a cosmic
coincidence.
"I'm a musician myself and I know how hard it is just
to write music, let alone music choreographed to
action," said drummer Alex Harm, of Lowell,
Mass.,who put up one of the two Internet web pages
devoted to the synchroneities. "To make it match up
so well, you'd have to plan it."
Morris is convinced that ex-frontman Roger Waters
planned the whole thing without letting his fellow
band members in on the secret.
"It's too close. It's just too close. Look at the song
titles. Look at the cover. There's something going on
there," Morris said.
Here's how it works. You start the album at the
exact moment when the MGM lion finishes its third
and last roar. It might take a few times to get
everything lined up just right.
Then, just sit back and watch. It'll blow your mind,
man.
During "Breathe," Dorothy teeters along a fence to
the lyric: "balanced on the biggest wave."
The Wicked Witch, in human form, first appears on
her bike at the same moment a burst of alarm bells
sounds on the album.
During "Time," Dorothy breaks into a trot to the line:
"no one told you when to run."
When Dorothy leaves the fortuneteller to go back to
her farm, the album is playing: "home, home again."
Glinda, the cloyingly saccharine Good Witch of the
North, appears in her bubble just as the band sings:
"Don't give me that do goody goody bull---t."
A few minutes later, the Good Witch confronts the
Wicked Witch as the band sings, "And who knows
which is which" (or is that "witch is witch"?).
The song "Brain Damage" starts about the same time
as the Scarecrow launches into "If I Only Had a
Brain."
But it's not just the weird lyrical coincidences. Songs
end when scenes switch, and even the Munchkins'
dancing is perfectly choreographed to the song "Us
and Them."
The phenomenon is at its most startling during the
tornado scene, when the wordless singing in "The
Great Gig in the Sky" swells and recedes in strikingly
perfect time with the movie.
When Dorothy opens the door into Oz, the movie
switches to rich color and and that exact moment
the album starts in with the tinkling cash register
sound effects from "Money."
Anyone who has ever nursed a hangover watching
MTV with the sound off and the radio on can tell you
how quick the brain is to turn music into a
soundtrack for pictures. But this is uncanny.
The real fanatics will point out that side one of the
vinyl album is the exact length of the black-and-white
portion of the movie. And then there's that iconic
album cover, with its prism and rainbow echoing the
movie's famous black-and-white-into-color switch
not to mention Judy Garland's classic first song.
The real clincher, though, the moment where even
the most skeptical of cynics has to utter a small
"whoa!," comes at the end of the album, which tails
off with the insistent sound of a beating heart.
What's happening on screen? Yep, you guessed it:
Dorothy's got her ear to the Tin Man's chest,
listening for a heartbeat.
Maybe it's just a string of coincidences. Maybe the
mind is just playing some really cool tricks. Maybe
some people just have waaaay too much time on
their hands.
Or maybe, as Pink Floyd sings to close out the
album, everything under the sun really is in tune.

Does Sex Urge Cut Male Life-Span?
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Live fast, die young? One geneticist believes men
might live longer were it not for their ceaseless search for sex.
According to an article in the current issue of the New Scientist, animal
studies conducted by British scientist David Gems of London's University
College are providing evidence that "males of other species would live
longer than females if it weren't for their energetic sexual activity."
One of the advantages to being a female has been a longer life-span --
government statistics say American women now live to an average of age of
79, compared with the median male life-span of just 72.5.
But Gems says that may not be as our gender-specific biological clocks
intend. Males, in fact, may be programmed to live longer than females --
but their sex urge gets in the way.
Gems arrived at this theory after studying the nematode worm Caenorhabditis
elegans. Gems explains that while most worms are labeled hermaphroditic,
they are "essentially females capable of making a small number of sperm for
self-fertilization." In every worm population, however, there are a few
true males.
When Gems grouped male worms together he found that, as statistically
projected, they died at about 10 days of age. But when the males were left
alone, separated from other males, their life-spans doubled -- to 20 days,
four days longer than the average female life-span.
Gems believe the isolated worm's life-spans increased because they no
longer needed to restlessly move about, compete for mates and defend
worm-territory. "In males, but not in (hermaphrodite females), life-span is
limited by the rate of movement," Gems explained. He believes there is a
'threshold' of activity which, once passed, limits life-span. "Males are
naturally above that threshold, and so their life-spans are shorter."
Of course worms are a far cry from the evolutionary complexity of modern
homo sapiens. But Gems believes his nematode studies are backed up by work
in other species.
He points to the case of male marsupial mice, which normally live just a
few hedonistic weeks; according to Gems, "they spend 5 to 11 hours a day
copulating." However, those life-spans grow considerably longer (and, no
doubt, less exciting) if the rodents lose their sex drive -- castrated
marsupial mice can live for years.
But what about humans? Gems points to a 1969 study of 319 (human) eunuchs,
which revealed their average life-span to be 13.5 years longer than intact
males. And he notes that though women do, on average, live longer than men,
men form the majority of those surviving past 90 years of age. SOURCE: New
Scientist (May 24, 1997, p. 19)
