14.61 | | IJSAPL::ANDERSON | Like to help me avoid an ulcer? | Mon Jan 27 1997 10:16 | 20 |
| Harry has been given a nice new PC at work. This replaces the rather
ancient PC that he has had for the last few years.
Whilst his old system ran a nice user friendly version of DOS the new
model comes equipped with a user hostile Windows95. Whoever wrote the
help files for this monster should be taken out, put against a wall and
shot.
To make it slightly more complicated the cryptic help messages are all
in Dutch.
I managed to figure out the way to exit Windows95, but when you boot the
system it insists on loading the damn thing.
Question. How do I get it to either load DOS and not load Windows95
until it gets told to do it, or gives the user a choice?
Any ideas?
Jamie.

| Jamie, easy now we'll lead you through the nightmare that is
WinDoze 95
A Quick and easy method is to press the F8 key when the little
phrase 'Loading Windows95' appears.
This will give you a menu.
Download from my web page http://piper1.jgo.dec.com/~dwn/home.html
The Powertoys and install them as the desctructions tell you.
One of the Toys is TweakUI which lets you easily change the boot up
method.
Or
Go to dos and do the following:
C:> attrib -h -s -r msdos.sys
c:> edit msdos.sys
Change the BootGUI=1 line to BootGUI=0
Anything else?

| WinDoze comments out the MSCDEX from your autoexec when it installs.
When you exit windows to DOS it should copy the autoexec.dos to
autoexec.bat and execute it, in this should be the MSCDEX.
If you are booting into dos alone then you have to add the call to the
MicroShaft CDRom Extensions yourself, as Jamie says easiest way is to
uncomment them from the Autoexec.bat.
I have created a BAT file to do various things on boot as I need to
boot into one of 4 different setups depending on the work I'm doing..

0990 111444
When you get the card, there's an 0800 number on a removable pad. That
number goes through to the same people. I wish I hadn't lost the number.
I plan to do all my business with them through postal mail, with an explanation
that I don't use 0990 numbers. Hopefully the extra effort and expense they
will go to will really rile them.

| Why should one not use 0990 numbers?
0990 numbers are charged at full national rate wherever you call them from.
That means that even if you are calling a building ten yards down the street
you get charged full national rate.
0990 numbers are exempt from discounts. So if you pay your #25(?) a year
for premier line, you ain't getting the promised discount on 0990 numbers.
People are not warned how much 0990 calls are going to cost them, unlike premium
rate numbers.
And hwo can anyone take a company's customer service seriously if the company
deliberately goes for a number that will be expensive for the customer to call
rather than 0345 or 0800?

Another trick that I've found, is that girlies like to send two cards,

Thanks, we've got around 200 in stock here in Nijmegen,
unfortunatly digital wants me to cough up $300 for one.
As this machine is sitting at home and cost 75 guilders (25quid) paying
$300 for a card is a little excessive, I was rather hoping someone had
bought one privately and no longer needed it.
Thanks anyway for checking,
Hugs

Here is an interesting (?) word-processing or DTP question:
I want to publish an article as a small booklet in A5 format, by
printing the article in 2 columns on A4 paper (landscape, double-sided)
and folding it in half to get A5.
This means you have to print the pages in a funny order, i.e. the
first sheet of paper will have the last page on the left hand side and
the first page on the right hand side, etc, so that when it is folded
the pages come out in the correct order. The page numbers themselves
must be correct for the A5 format, not the A4 two-up format.
How can I do this automatically? Are there Word macros available which
re-order the pages? Or is this a standard function of a DTP package?
The alternative of course is to cut and paste each 'page' of the
document, either using Word or manually.

'Citybreaks' type brochures. Their prices are normally very hard to beat.
'Course, if it's early April you could always come along and see "Carousel"

| Folks,
This is from our own dear Mr. Winpenny. Take particular note of the
threat at the bottom:
----------------------------------------
I've tried everything I can think of to sort this out but have so far
failed, not miserably but near enough. So the next step is to pool the
collective brain cell of EF and hope to get some pointers, which might
turn out to be a pun.
Assuming there is a third party 'C' structure as follows.
typedef struct {char[11] customer_pin_no;
char[11] address_id;
char[26] customer_surname;
.
.
.
char[21] product_part_no;
char[21] product_serial_no;
char[12] product_purchase_date;
} registration_data;
And a function definition in a shareable image is:
int register_details (registration_data p_reg,
char error_desc[132]);
And I have to call this from Pascal. I currently have the following
Pascal bits and pieces.
type
w_registration_data = record
customer_pin_no : packed array [1..10] of char;
null_a : char;
address_id : packed array [1..10] of char;
null_b : char;
customer_surname : packed array [1..25] of char;
null_c : char;
.
.
.
product_source_cd : packed array [1..20] of char;
null_y : char;
product_serial_no : packed array [1..20] of char;
null_z : char;
product_purchase_date : packed array [1..11] of char;
null_a1 : char;
end;
{
All the null_* business above is to make space for the end of string
marker used by 'C' and it's easier to take care of it here.
{}
var
_registration_data : w_registration_data;
begin
{
Populate _registration_data and stick nulls in where they are expected.
{}
_status := lib$find_image_symbol (filename := 'SHAREABLE_IMAGE_NAME',
symbol := 'register_details',
symbol_value := entry_point);
arglist[1] := 2;
arglist[2] := iaddress(_registration_data);
arglist[3] := iaddress(error_text);
local_status := lib$callg (%ref arglist, entry_point);
end;
I get an access violation error on the LIB$CALLG. Now all this works
when I'm requesting data from other functions in the shareable image
and they fill a record structure but in this case I'm sending a record
for the data to be registered elsewhere. So either I've cocked up the
arglist[2] type, the record definition I've been given does not match
that in the image and the only person who can tell me that is on
holiday for two weeks, or I've completely messed up and can't see for
looking.
Any help gratefully received, [email protected]
Chris
Ps. If nobody replies I'll find a way to join the conference.

| Mr. Winpenny, it appears, has sorted himself out (fnarr!).
Cheers, Laurie.
------------------
I remember the days when a single technical question would illicit a
multitude of suggestions however outrageous or complex. Alas it appears
that things have changed unless there are are a bunch of replies in the
conference which I can't access.
Anyway for those who may be thinking about it or are interested the
solution to my problem follows.
Normally the arguments to LIB$CALLG would be a list of unsigned numbers
passed in an argument list defined as:
var
arglist : [volatile,static] array [1..3] of unsigned;
Which would be fine if the function register_details had been defined in
'C' as:
int register_details (registration_data p_reg[],
char error_desc[132]);
However by omitting the square brackets on p_reg the function is
expecting text and not a pointer value.
So by redefining arglist as follows text can be passed into the function.
type
t_arglist = record
no : unsigned;
data : [volatile,unsafe] packed array [1..size(reg_data)] of char;
error : unsigned;
end;
var
arglist : t_arglist;
begin
_status := lib$find_image_symbol (filename := 'SHAREABLE_IMAGE_NAME',
symbol := 'register_details',
symbol_value := entry_point);
arglist.no := 2;
arglist.data := _registration_data;
arglist.error := iaddress(error_text);
local_status := lib$callg (iaddress(arglist), entry_point);
end;
Simple really when you know the widdly bit about the square brackets, but
I'm not a 'C' coder and it took a while to figure out the difference
between with and without brackets.

which would automatically take all the correct parameters.
At least, I expect that would be the best advice he could get here.

A customer of mine, from Oracle, wondered how compression deals with

Presumably it will either: not work on record based files, or move the

| I need a recommendation for photo processing places. No, it's not that
sort of photo - let me explain.
I recently got Marie to take a film of pictures at a dance rehearsal.
Since we were moving (for me!) fairly quickly and the room was quite dark,
we used a Kodak TIMAX black-and-white film. It was nominally rated at ISO
3200, but the bumf inside said it could be run +/- two stops, so we used it
at 12,500.
Things went well until we took it back to Williamson and Wolfe for
processing. "Oh no," they said, "we can't get that processed." On further
questioning, they were willing to send it to Kodak for processing, but
reckoned that Kodak would be very unlikely to honour the two-stop pushing.
So I'd get very boring pictures!
W&W recommended two photographers who might be willing to process the film.
Yep, at around a tenner for developing and either five or ten pounds _per
print_ to print the thing!
SO, I'm trying to find out whether anyone can recommend a photo
processor that will (a) do black-and-white processing at a sensible price,
and (b) might even cope with the two-stop push of the film.
Any recommendations, anyone?
Thanks,
regards,
//alan

It depends in which country the person is being paid/taxed.
On several occasions I have been working in the USA but being pair and
taxed from Europe. So any tax that I would be dodging would be of
interest to the UK tax man. Unless I was dodging sales tax, then the

need an internet gateway machine that can take incoming VAXMail, and send

to deal with this. At a minimum, I'd say he'll need a recent version of

Now that I know that group 3 fax and class 1 fax modem are completely
different the clouds are clearing. It doesn't help any but at least I

incompatible with class 1. We need class 1 modems and whilst it's easy
to find a modem which only provides for the class 2 protocol which as
far as I know hasn't been firmly defined yet it is proving difficult to
find class 1 fax modems. It's probably a case of that's got a higher
number on it so it's got to be better and we want to be at the front so
drop everything else but I've already had enough of that attitude and
don't want to get into it again and ...... ad infinitum....

Statement
I have worked for Digital for 16 years, always in a customer facing role,

Customer Support Centre. I therefore graphically understand the problems being
faced by the people at the sharp end. It saddens me that Digital is no longer
the company I joined, but I remain committed to its recovery. I believe this
will only occur after senior management start to listen to us - we the people
are Digital; we have a right to be heard; our input is valuable - this I will

| They are standing as candidates for the Special Negotiating Body for
the European Works Council. At the first meeting of the SNB the
delgates from (Maastrict signed up) EC countries voted to invite those
European countries excluded, and the company 'agreed' to this. Don't
ask me how the nominations were done, phone one of the candidates and
ask them. There is some info on the Irish election in Tallis::celt.
Initially the company wanted to 'appoint' reps, but after a protest by
some employees of Digital Ireland there was a (rather rushed) election.
At least in the UK there will be a postal ballot, so everyone will
have the chance to vote.

| This was explained in a mail message from Alan Evans, UK HR Director,
dated 17/4/97. It stated that any employee of more than
12 months standing could be nominated to stand for the election, but
since the nominations had to be at the ERS by noon on 25/4/97, there
wasn't a great deal of time for anybody to canvass nominations. I hope
we will get more notice of invitations to nominations to the actual
EWC.

Maybe it's something that fell into the cracks between being in the
UK sub and being in VMS Engineering...

| This reliance on e-mail to announce elections really isn't good enough.
It caused all manner of hassle in Ireland as nominations had to be
reopened, which is in itself very suspect, as it enables candidates to
'emerge' on a tactical basis when others have declared. It is certainly
an issue to get sorted before the EWC elections. However, unless the
uk signs up to Maastrict or there is voluntary agreement, the uk may
have to bow out again.

Does anybody know if a company by the name of Data Logic is still in existance
over there in the UK? They were based in Harrow and Harlow. If they do still
exist, can someone provide the postcode and telephone number of the Harlow
office. I need the information as I took out a personal pension plan when I
worked for them and my pension company believes that I was given wrongful
information at that time.
Thanks,
POL
