116.0. "A2100 graphics console" by LISVAX::RIBEIRO_N (NELSON RIBEIRO @XIP) Tue May 27 1997 07:27

Hi all,

i have a costumer who is reporting that after a reboot, his machine A2100, that
has a PCX type monitor has a console, stoped from giving the session manager on
the console.
Now, the monitor (pc style) work has a terminal not as a graphics console.
According to the costumer, decwindows is active because he is able to start a
decwindows session on a pc (like xcursion, ...).
He also says that there is no error logged on the operator.log .

Can someone help me on this?

He has vms v7.0 installed.

Thanks,
NElsonR.

(At least to me, the problem statement is not particularly clear.
As a result, I'm making some guesses here...)

I'm guessing that the customer is seeing the "glass hardcopy terminal"
console display (akin to the display used during the system startup
before the DECwindows displays are started), and is not seeing the
expected the workstation graphics display, after a system reboot.

Either DECwindows is not starting, it's not finding the workstation
display -- make certain the SYSGEN parameter WINDOW_SYSTEM is set to
one -- and check for any startup errors. Also check for the (incorrect)
use of LOGOUT or other SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM problems. Also look for any
DECwindows error messages displayed during startup, and check the
DECwindows server log files for errors. Also make sure the SYSGEN
parameters are set to values sufficient for the use of DECwindows.

What version of DECwindows is in use? V1.2-4, with ECOs, is current.

I'd also recommend upgrading to OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, from V7.0.
