    Customer want to buy a pretty new AlphaServer
    Customer know, that now only Alpha's with Very Cool EV5 CPU are available.
    Customer know too, that soon Alpha's will be supplied with EV6 CPU
    which is Much More Cooler.

    Questions:
    1. How soon (some days/some weeks/some months)
    2. If not Soon (some months) that how can an EV5 Alpha be upgaded
       to EV6 one (investment protection)
       - CPU Upgrade
       - Main Board upgrade
       - Whole Server upgrade (as by example when AS1000 to AS1000A upgrade)

111.1Public dates given for EV6STAR::jacobi.zko.dec.com::jacobiPaul A. Jacobi - OpenVMS Systems GroupMon May 19 1997 16:3415
At the October '96 Microprocessor Forum, EV6 (21264) was public announced with
the two given dates:

Samples:	Q1 97
Volume:		H2 97

At least one person in comp.arch Usenet newsgroup has noticed that these dates
appear to be a bit optimistic.

I think the complete slide presentation is available publicly on the external WWW
site, but I can't remember the URL.

111.2Contact Platform PM For Suggestions...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringMon May 19 1997 18:0324
   We have been replacing the Alpha microprocessor family once every two
   years (or so), and have been enhancing the current member(s) of the
   Alpha microprocessor family more often than that...

   The current Alpha processors are largely from the EV56 series; the
   EV5 and earlier series are available only in older (and slower)
   designs, and a few hold-over and entry-level systems...

   For better or worse, we don't talk about these sorts of upgrades
   until we are cleared by the product managers, or under a NDA/PID.
   In the specific case of an EV6 upgrade for a member of the Mikasa
   series (AlphaServer 1000x), contact the Mikasa product manager and
   see what -- if anything -- the PM would like passed along to this
   customer.

   Some boxes have EV6 upgrades planned, some don't.

   (As should be obvious, a premature announcement of an upgrade can
   cause the value of a current system to plummet, and can cause new
   sales of the system to halt in anticipation of the upgrade... And
   as should also be obvious, in two years, any current system will
   still likely be quite useful, but technologically quite obsolete.)
