100.0. "Memory SImms of pc on Alpha" by LISVAX::RIBEIRO_N (NELSON RIBEIRO @XIP) Wed May 07 1997 13:12

Hi all,
recently i have been assigned a call about a Alphaserver 1000.

It was an hardware problem so i went to the costumer's office to see it.
The machine had 64 Mb of memory in 4 simms of 16 Mb. The simms had the following
part-number 54-23170-AA, which i ordered with no problem at all. After i few
test i decided to change the ECC simm which had the part-number 54-23170-KA, and
the problems began.

While i was searching the ECC simm to this machine i didn't find anything
mentioning that the ECC simm for this machine was 54-23170-KA, instead i found
that this part-number is not applied to any of the alpha systems, but it is
applied to the venturis pc line.
Then why was it installed on this machine? Human error or just lack of
information on my side?

And what is the part-number for the ECC simm for this machine?
I found some information while wondering in the net about these machines should
have all of the simms (including the ECC) of the same type (same part-number).
Is this correct?

I need some help because althought now the machine is not crashing every hour,
it has crashed two times on the previous 4 days.

Need help, please,
NelsonR.

    Hi Nelson

asrv1000/1000a 4/xxx systems need qty=5 simms per bank of memory
qty=4 data simms and qty=1 ecc simm

they are usually all the same size

in your case you could use 54-23170-ba instead of 54-23170-ka ecc simm

but there was a cost reduced memory option shipped on some systems

that has qty=4 16meg data simms and qty=1 ecc simm that only has
1/4 of the data rams on it and can only be used ecc simm not for
    data simm

    from BOM

    pb7ma-bc 64mb option consisting of four 54-23170-ba 4mx36.1 inch
              simm 60ns and one 54-23170-ka 4m x 16 (ecc bit) simm

asrv1000/1000a 5/xxx systems do not need a ecc simm at all since
the EV5 cpu uses a differnet parity scheme and no need for ecc simm

there is asrv1000/1000a notesfile at WRKSYS::MIKASA if needed
