79.0. "OpenVMS support/selling of AlphaServer 2000 5/375" by BEET::EAGAN (Among the fashion impaired...) Tue Apr 08 1997 18:13

The most recent (7 Apr 97) SOC section on the AlphaServer 2000
	(V96-2.5) lists support as:

AlphaServer 2000 5/300 -- Digital UNIX, OpenVMS, Windows NT)

AlphaServer 2000 5/375 -- Digital UNIX, Windows NT)

Is this in error? If not, what's the scoop?

The EV56 5/375 (GammaRAY) module is about to commence shipping from
manufacturing.

- NIO and AYO are now authorized to ship either Field Upgrades or AS2000
  EV56/375 systems

However;
During the final qualification testing of the AlphaServer 5/375 CPU module,
the determination was made that OpenVMS support will require significant
additional effort and time to port on this CPU. In view of the fact that this
incremental investment will distract our resources from the current OpenVMS
development activities, and may not be available in time to meet customer's
requirement, it was decided that this specific CPU would be supported only on
the Windows NT and UNIX operating systems. This is an isolated decision and in
NO way diminishes our strong committment to OpenVMS systems.

Just curious but what does this CPU do differently that requires the
    porting effort?

I'm curious too, there was a proposal in the POR (Plan Of
Record) to bring this system in under DSR on V6.2-1H3.
(On exactly _zero_ knowledge, I suspect this may have been
more of a question around the resources to do the testing
in the GammaRay group...) As mentioned, I've passed this
along to the OpenVMS PM that maintains the POR.

   My guess was wrong.

OpenVMS is not presently supported on GammaRay.

Please refer any questions regarding this issue to Bill Hanley, the
OpenVMS Product Manager for hardware platform support. Due to reasons
beyond our control, OpenVMS cannot support this hardware platform.

    Hmmm. Sounds bad.

Nope. I inhaled, admit to having enjoyed premarital bliss, still
pronounce Reagan "Ray-Gun-Zap", enjoy non-PC vices like cigars and
scotch, and think social security is a scam that should be
discontinued. I also live amongst the republicans in NH, and think the
only bigger idiot in congress than Newt is Dick Army.

Dunno. Jesse gets my vote.
Someone must have their head screwed on wrong if VMS can't support
an apparantly useful platform & the reason isn't engineering.

Please check with Bill -- this decision was made outside of OpenVMS.

Yup. There are other considerations.
