62.0. "AS300/RRD45 upgrade needs additional parts?" by KERNEL::CLARK (STRUGGLING AGAINST GRAVITY...) Fri Mar 14 1997 08:27
Customer has got an alphaserver 300.
He wanted to add on a CDROM, and ordered PBXRD-CA.
This arrived, and the customer set about trying to install it.
For physical reasons, this has to be fitted into the outside right top
position, and must therefore be the last physical device on the SCSI
bus. It must also be the device which carries the end-bus terminator.
There are no terminating resistors shipped with PBXRD-CA.
The existing end-bus terminator prior to adding the RRD45 is a plug in
terminator assembly which is plugged into the last socket on the
floating SCSI cable. This has 3 x 11-pin resistor packs SOLDERED to the
terminator PCB assembly. It will not plug in to the RRD45 directly.
The customer can purchase resistor packs from DIGITAL, but (a) resents
the fact that the package he ordered specifically to upgrade hs AS300
is insufficiently specified, and (b) DIGITAL's SERVICESTORE for
supplies and consumables have a #15-00 minimum order, and the resistor
packs are 80p each.
Is there some hidden procedure for completing this install with the
available parts, or is this an up-cock in the upgrade bundle
specification?

| We don't ship term resistor packs with most of our drives....
No plans to, either... too many people leave them in and triple
terminate (or worse) the bus, which causes more problems.
Is the PBXRD-CA the upgrade kit specified for the AS300, or is it a
generic PC upgrade part #?
Has the customer run out of connectors on the cable? The termination is
supposed to be taken care of by that plug in pak - you are not supposed
to have to remove it.
