39.0. "Ethernet grounded to chassis ?" by FRAIS::KHAN () Mon Feb 03 1997 11:41

    One AS500/500 has been causing network errors. It looks like the
    internal Ethernet ( thinwire MAU ) is the culprit. A PCI device
    works, while ping on the internal NI has >80% error rate.
    It is a technical University and so we have lots of environmental
    factors to check, but it looks like the BNC connector has its outer
    connection ( ground or shield ) connected to the chassis ground !!!
    Is this correct ?
    I will be able to verify this as soon as I get a MAU. Can a proud owner
    of such a fast machine tell me that it's not true ?

39.2Possible MAU installation error ? ("What's this plastic for?")BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Wed Feb 05 1997 04:5210
    If it's the same MAU as on the 255, it should have a nylon bush between
    the coax socket and the chassis. If the MAU has been field installed by
    someone who didn't understand, they may have discarded the nylon bush
    (apparently it needs to be fitted from the *outside* of the box whereas
    the socket is fitted from the inside).

    does this help ?

    regards
