Just saw this in February's Computer Shopper, an Alpha PC 366mhz, called an Ultra PC by Enorex $3k. Its got a Digital PC164 Motherboard, 2.5 Gig EIDE disk, SVGA PCI video card (thats all it says), Toshiba CDrom, 32MB memory, etc. pg 144. I was curious whether Digital Unix and OpenVMS might be usable on this?

The EB164 is supported by OpenVMS Alpha V6.2-1H3, and by V7.1 and later. The PC164 (at least, not under that name) is not supported. (See the Software Product Description (SPD) for OpenVMS for details.) There are variety of different PC-class Alpha motherboards available from Digital (particularly Digital Semiconductor)... See the semiconductor home pages for some basic information on the boards and the software product descriptions for support information, and see WRKSYS::XL_PERSONAL_WORKSTATION for information on the Miata platform (OpenVMS support for Miata is either in place, or is likely). Also see note 1831.* over in VAXAXP::NOTES$ARCHIVE:VMSNOTES_V12. And see 582.* and 612.* over in RICKS::DECHIPS. | |||||

This reply is contributed for Greg Devereaux. I think the Alpha PC 366mhz is strictly a NT system. There was no mention of Dig ital Unix or Openvms compatability. Here is a URL to there product page so you can lo ok yourself... (http://www.enorex.com/products.html) The systems offered don't mention compatability with LINUX unix, But it should r un on these boxes possibly. For Third party systems that are certified to run Digit al UNIX or OpenVMS there are a growing list of other Vendors to choose from. (http://www.microway.com/) (http://www.apache.com/pages/alpha.phtml) (http://www.damicon.fi/alpha/) (http://www.carrera.com/) (http://www.dcginc.com/product.html) (http://140.198.144.65/axp-faq/FAQ-7.html) Vendor links page (http://www.aspsys.com/) This should provide you with enough resources with excellent pricing on Alpha ba sed systems and components. Happy Shopping. Greg. |
