34.0. "Installing NT on Alpha from afar" by CRONIC::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Tue Jan 28 1997 10:45

    Hi

Is it possible to install Windows NT on an Alpha system without putting
the Windows NT CDROM into the local CDROM drive?

    Thanks!

What problem are you trying to solve?

Re .0, it is possible and depending on what state the target system is
in (fresh, running NT, network connection, etc.).

    Thanks for the replies.

Re .1, I want to install Windows NT on an Alpha system without having
to visit each system with a floppy.

Re .2, I guess the state would be fresh (nothing on the system disk).
So I'm wondering if remotely triggering a load via the network
interface (Ethernet or FDDI) is possible (or even desirable, come to
think of it, for security reasons). If not that, how about a floppy
with a bar-bones file share client, such that I could mount a CDROM in
    a remote system.

    Thanks for the dialogue!

34.4NT Question, Ask The NT FolksXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Jan 29 1997 10:214
I'd take this up with the more NT-knowledgable folks over in the NT
notes conferences or internal newsgroups, and/or with Microsoft.

Re .3, you may want to bring the topic up in the NT conference(s).
There are activities at DECwest (in the AlphaBIOS area) that may
satisfy your requirements in the future.
