687.0. "Volume shadowing" by KAOT01::GU_LAROCQUE () Wed Jun 04 1997 11:11

Can someone please confirm the following for me.

I have a customer with 3 shadow sets consisting of 3 volumes each.

The customer dismounts the 3 shadow sets and remounts them as 2 volume
shadow sets. He then does a backup of the 3rd disk. Once the backups
are completed, adds the 3rd disk.

Now, the customer has SHADOW_MAX_COPY set to 1 on this system.
For whatever reason, the customer decides to dismounmt the 3rd drives
from the shadow set, but gets the following error intermitenly.

%MOUNT-F-DEVALLOC, device already allocated to another user

I suspect what is happening is that the 1st shadow copy has not completed,
the other volumes are queued to be added to the shadow set.
The shadowing software is what is causing the error to be generated?

Does this make any sense?

What version of MOUNT & SHADOWING is the customer running??

   Are the disks mount/system?

Does this message only occur on the shadow set on which a copy is
being performed, or does it also happen on a set which is waiting for
   a copy?

Are they really getting a %MOUNT error while DISmounting the 3rd member?

   Cheers,
   jeff

Jeff, although on an Alpha, does this sound like expected behaviour.

1st message I posted was not as clear as I had hoped.

The customer dismounts the 3 shadow sets while there are shadow copies
going on (one shadow has copy in progress,2 other 2 are waiting at 0%)
then tries to remount the shadow sets as 2 member volume sets,
he gets the %MOUNT-F-DEVALLOC on the two shadow sets which were
waiting for copy, the third shadow set with copy in progress mounted
succesfully with 2 members.

(This is on an Alpha running V6.2-1h3)
