685.0. "System Requirement on OVMS 5.5-2 and 6.2" by HGOV08::PATRICKNG () Wed Jun 04 1997 05:47

    Hi,

A customer is looking for the information what are the extra workload
required when OpenVMS upgrade from v5.5-2 to v6.2.

I couldn't find the SPD on OpenVMS 5.5-2 and v6.2. Does anyone who know
the system requirement on the OpenVMS 5.5-2 and 6.2?

    Thanks,
    Patrick

Workload? We generally do not characterize performance differences
between releases in documentation -- we generally have targets around
overall OpenVMS performance on the main code paths that an upgrade
must not exceed, but I'd be surprised to see any explicit statements
or performance characterizations in any customer documentation...

The SPDs list minimum system disk and memory requirements for support.
(The V6.2 SPD is available on BULOVA::, see pointers to the release
kit and documentation directories in notes 8.* and 9.*.)

As for system requirements, those are called out in the installation
and upgrade manual (and in the SPD) -- the upgrade manual is something
the customer should read prior to performing the upgrade...

And in any case, the customer needs to look at the local application
workload, as -- given this question is being asked -- the customer
might already need to upgrade their hardware configuration or processor,
regardless of the OpenVMS VAX upgrade.

Customer copies of the documentation are available from (and should be
   ordered from) the SSB.

    Patrick,

If you're asking about the change in system performance between
V5.5-2 and V6.2, consider that V6 introduced the Virtual I/O Cache.
Therefore, for *some* workloads, V6.x will perform better than V5.
