645.0. "two foolish problems.." by QCAV01::INETPUNE () Mon May 26 1997 09:39

hello...

i have two queries..

1) one of my customer is running alpha-vms version on alpha 255.
   vms version 6.2-1h2.

the system is running with motif version 1.2-4.

he is using an application s/w from honeywell.

customer is facing problem with icons below the menu gets disturbed if a
   menu is selected.

secondly if some option is selected a dialog box/combo-box and
if the application is asked to make the changes accordingly ,
the application gets aborted saying "acces violations reason mask = 00"

honeywell says that it works fine with motif version 1.1 .

hence i will like to ask whether motif versin 1.1 will work
   vms 6.2-1h2.

   i have a cusotmer who has motif 1.1 running on alpha-vms 1.5 .

i cannot install a vms having version lower than 6.2-1h2 as the
alpha 255 is not supported by those versions.

2) secondly one cusotmer has alpha 2100. he is trying to connect the modem
on both the serial lines. ( tta0: and opa1:)

   the customer has graphics console.

customer is getting following error after getting connected.

" open vms-alpha system modem not wired properly ; contact your system
    manager"

the terminal characterastics for tta0: and opa1: are exactly identical.

can you suggest probable solutions ?

thanks a lot in advance..

best regards..

    re .0

    1) Try DECWINDOWS conference.

    2) Sounds like something that would be covered by a STARS article.

re: .0, I've updated the title to reflect the questions.

  1a: You probably have a TGA2 (PBXGB-AA, PowerStorm 3D30) graphics
controller -- if so, this problem is known, and there are several
workarounds for the icon corruption, and there is likely an updated
code in the Open3D package. (Make sure you use the correct version
of Open3D for the TGA2 and for OpenVMS Alpha V6.2-1Hx.) See the
BGSDEV::Open3D and BULOVA::DECwindows conferences, as well as COMET,
for previous discussions of the icon corruptions.

1b: The application contains a bug, or the X libraries contain
a bug. Honeywell will need to look at the source code and
determine where the ACCVIO is arising -- that an application
works on one release has no bearing on its actual correctness.
Latent bugs, you see, can lie dormant for months or years...
Resolving this will require access to the failing call(s) and
debugging time. As for Motif 1.1, that release is sufficiently
old that it is not supported under a "Prior Version" contract.
(Your customer is unfortunately caught in an "interesting" spot
here, between DIGITAL and Honeywell.) This is best discussed
over in BULOVA::DECwindows, once some source code is available.

2: I'll send you some prototype modem-wiring documentation we are
working on for the documentation for the next OpenVMS release.
