569.0. "Problem installing VMS7.0 on AS1000A 5/333" by DEKVC::SWSPKO () Wed May 07 1997 05:44

I have a problem installing OpenVMS on Alphaserver 1000A 5/333.
It was originally configured as NT system, and I switched to SRM to install
OpenVMS AXP 7.0.

The firmware version installed was as follows.
	1) SRM V4.8-74, ARC V5.28, VMS Palcode V1.19-4

I tried firmware 3.7 update CD also.
	2) SRM V4.6-227, ARC V5.21, VMS Palcode V1.18-2
	   The image is [ALPHA1000A]AS1000A_E5_V4_6.EXE
        3) SRM V4.5-80 , ARC V5.13, VMS Palcode V1.21-4
           The image is [ALPHA1000A]AS1000A_E5_V4_5.EXE

I tried all possible combination using 1),2),3) and VMS7.0, VMS6.2, VMS6.2 1H2,
but failed with the same CPU halt message.

	.
	.
	.
	.
	jumping to bootstrap code
	Halted CPU0
	Halt code = 5
	Halt instruction executed
	PC = 2000fd98

Firmware 3.2 update CD comes with VMS6.2, and Firmware 3.5 update CD comes with
VMS6.2 1H2. I tried to setup those 2 firmware CD using ">>> b -fl 0,a0 dka400",
but got the same CPU halt message.
Firmware 3.7 update CD was the only one I got success, which comes with Digital
-Unix4.0.

Is there any expert out there to help me? I'd really appreciate it.

Best Regards,
	Lee

You need either VMS V6.2-1H3 or V7.1 or above for this machine. V7.0 won't work.

569.2How To Get Minimum OpenVMS Version InformationXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed May 07 1997 10:3720
Here are some ways to find out the minimum OpenVMS version needed:

o Check HUMANE::SYS$PUBLIC:EASYNOTES.LIS for the platform
       notes conference, and look there.

o Link to http://webir.das.dec.com/ and look up the product
       announcement information.

o Link to http://comet.alf.dec.com/ and run a search for a
document title (in the stars_operating_systems area) that
matches the string "CPU Operating System Versions and Release
Dates Table Flowchart". (I'll see about posting a copy of this
document here -- it is _well_ worth having a local copy.)

Note that any platform first supported by a V6.2-1Hx hardware release
   is next supported by V7.1 -- the V6.2-1Hx releases post-date the V7.0
release, and contain more configuration and platform support than V7.0.
Also note that V6.2-1H3 contains all of the prior V6.2-1Hx releases.
