535.0. "Pagefault I/Os hang to ZR devices" by CSC32::HOCKETT () Sun Apr 27 1997 02:13
Customer has seen several of these hangs. We suspect that the problem
is with Disk Miser ZR.. devices from SYMARK but SYMARK says it is not their
problem.
Has anyone seen this problem anywhere else?
Customer is also running I/O express but the problem has occured with
I/O express shut off.
Customer has shut off Dynamic Load Balancer but it has not been enough time
to know if the problem has occured again.
I have been looking over the forced crash from 5-MAR-1997 15:20:30.19 on
your VAX 4000-100A system AGPROC. The system appears to have basically
"hung" when the processes (including the SWAPPER) where stuck waiting
for I/Os to disks to complete (ZR devices). The problem is now trying
to identify why these I/Os are not completing !
o The SWAPPER process has done 4 I/Os to write out part of the Modified
Page List and is waiting for those I/Os to complete before doing more
work. This is causing 36 processes to wait in COMO state, and 61
processes in RWMPB state, all waiting for the SWAPPER, who is waiting
for one (any) of its 4 I/Os to complete.
o Process 0163 (MACKYG) is in PFW also waiting for a page I/O from one of
the ZR devices
o There are 12 waiting I/Os in a queue starting at address 81605640,
meaning there are probably 7 other processes waiting for their I/Os
as well (and are probably in LEF or some similiar state, which I
did not take the time to identify).
The queue header holding these waiting I/Os (IRPs) at 81605640 does not
appear to be a standard OpenVMS Structure - but something used by a third
party. This queue header is pointed to by the ZRA device UCBs (Diskmizer,
offset EC into the UCBs), and the IRPs themselves have also been intercepted
by IOX_DRIVER (I/O Express). I have been unable to identify why these
I/Os are stuck on this queue and are not completing to the disk.
I am unfamiliar with both of these products, and do not have the source
or engineering access to these products. I would suggest having the
vendors for these products take a look at the crash and see if they can
determine why the I/Os are not completing. I would suggest starting
with DISKMIZER (ZRICIDRVR) since the UCBs point to this queue head at
81605640. (But you might want to touch bases with both vendors to see
if they have had any problems with I/Os hanging when these products
are used together).
I suspect it could be a problem with one of these products, or the
combination of both products under some kind of timing condition -
but that is speculation at this time. (If it is possible to run
for a few weeks without these prodcuts it may be worth the effort).
I will leave call C970214-60 open for a while as we wait for more feedback.
If one or both of the vendors has more information as to why they think
it could be an OpenVMS issue we would be happy to talk to them.

You might want to get a hang dump from a system with I/O Express turned
off so that it and interactions with Disk Miser can be taken completely out
of the picture.
Without sources of Disk Miser it would be hard to say what's going on.
If Disk Miser requires some memory management actions to occur in order
to do its work, it is not inconceivable that some kind of "deadlock"
situation would occur if memory management in turn wrote to that disk.

Send a copy of the dump to SYMARK, and ask them to explain why I/Os
are hanging on the ZR device.
(I'd recommend posting a copy of the dumpfile on the internal net,
not SDA listings -- SDA listings almost invariably miss at least
some of the interesting parts of the operating system.)

| There were a number of problems I recall hearing about in dismizer's
release notes with logical I/O. Also, putting a pagefile on it
is likely to be crazy. Remember there's a user mode process doing
the compression. If it ever has a page fault to be resolved from
its own store, you're SOL. Deadlock.
BTW I do give a way a free compressing disk, and in source at that!
It's been on the freeware CD, sigtapes, etc. Also wrote Squash which
Acorn Software sells...but that isn't well suited to putting page or
swap files on either, since again there's a user mode process
out there that BETTER the heck not get a pagefault for data
it has to be recursively entered to handle.
