534.0. "Can't get DE450-CA to stay in AUI mode" by HOBBLE::MUSUMECI () Sat Apr 26 1997 16:14

I am having problems getting VMS to use the AUI port on my ethernet card.
Here is the configuration.

1. alphastation 255/233 this comes with a embedded twisted pair ethernet
   controller (EWA0).
2. PCI10 (DE450-CA) ethernet card. this card has twisted pair, bnc and aui
on the card. auto selectable (no jumpers,EWB0)
3. openvms alpha 7.1
4. TCP/IP services for openvms 4.1

I need to use the aui interface on the PCI10.
I set ewb0_mode to AUI at console mode. I have verified by ethernet address
that ewb0 is the PCI10.
I boot vms 7.1.
I get the messages: EWB0 AUI(10base5) mode set by console
                    EWA0 BNC(10base2) ethernet connection selected
		** EWB0 BNC(10base2) ethernet connection selected **

Sure enough when I run ucx and ping, i get hardware errors on the interface.
If I disconnect my transiever cable, set up a two node bnc connection
and ping the second node it works.

What is overiding the console mode setting and how do I control it?

Thanks

Chris Musumeci

When I added driver support for the EWx0_MODE console variable
I overlooked the transmit error path. If you don't have a cable
connected to the AUI port the driver will get a transmit error
and switch to BNC. Do you have a cable connected to the AUI port?

    Does cable=aui terminator?
When I installed open vms 7.1 only the aui terminator was connected.
Each time I boot the AUI cable is connected . the Twisted pair and the
bnc are left unterminated. Could logic be if no Twisted Pair cable then
    switch to bnc?

    Thanks

No. Apparently, you have a broken AUI terminator.

Possible. I will verify both the AUI network cable and the terminator.

    Thanks
