498.0. "VMS$COMMON SYSCOMMON FIS problems" by VIVIAN::D_BONO () Mon Apr 21 1997 07:52

    Hello,

    I have a customer who has recently had problems with DECinspect failing
    to run a lockdown command procedure. It was failing trying to set an
    ACL on SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR. They are running OpenVMS
    Alpha V6.2-1H3.

    It turned out the VMS$COMMON.DIR file header alias was SYSCOMMON.DIR not
    VMS$COMMON.DIR as seen from ...
    $ DUMP/HEAD/BLOCK=(COUNT=0) SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR

    We have applied the fix by renaming VMS$COMMON.DIR to SYSCOMMON.DIR and
    back again and this works O.K.

    However we have started looking around other machines and we find many
    systems are affected in this way. Even systems that were built from
    factory installed software running V6.2-1H3.

    My concern is that FIS systems have this problem. Has anyone else seen
    this from a raw install of FIS or off of CD? Is V7.1 affected?

    Thanks,

    Dave Bono (MCS London)

    I'm sure you saw this documented as fixed in the V6.1 Release Notes. My
    experience is that virtually every system has this problem unless it
    has been fixed. (The instructions given involve a more a SET
    FILE/ENTER to fix it. Not sure if your method is just as valid.)

    Could it be that the version of standalone backup on the kit does not
    have the fix?

498.2V7.1 from CD O.K FIS V6.2 not.VIVIAN::D_BONOFri May 09 1997 11:0515

    I have installed V7.1 from scratch from a CD and it had the file
    identification name is correct i.e. VMS$COMMON.DIR.

    Re .1 a set file/enter was not required as the alias was working
    correctly i.e. the file id's were the same however the Identification
    File Name from dump/head was still the old SYSCOMMON.DIR which was
    causing DECinspect to fail. The rename fixes this.

    I have looked at several OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 systems and they are all
    wrong with SYSCOMMON.DIR as their name and they all were factory installed.

    Dave.

498.3Contact FIS Folks...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringFri May 09 1997 12:529
   Ring up the FIS folks or the vendor, depending on where the box had
   the software installed -- there was a FIS comment card in with most
   (all?) of the shipments -- or contact the site where the software
   was installed.  (NIO?)

   [We FIS software. Sometimes we get systems assembled by one of our
   channel partners, and these folks may not be using the same FIS as
   we are -- the box may not have (does not have) the same FIS kit.]
