492.0. "Other (known) problems may affect reboot after 10K ECO" by UTRTSC::RVISSER () Fri Apr 18 1997 10:15

Possible boot problem after installing ALPLIBR05_070

Customer installed ALPLIBR05_070 on an Alpha 2000 with OpenVMS V6.2.

After succesfull installation of the patch the system was unbootable:

%EXECinit-E-LoadERR,error loading MESSAGES_ROUTINES.EXE status=00000044

(Status 00000044 >>> %SYSTEM-F-BADIMGHDR, bad image header)

After booting the 6.2 OpenVMS CD we found that this file had the correct
checksum (CHECKSUM/IMAGE), it was NOT corrupt.

It appeared that both files installed with ALPLIBR05_070
(SYS$LOADABLE_IMAGES:MESSAGES_ROUTINES.EXE and SYS$SHARE:LIBRTL.EXE)
had a file-id greater than 65536 (third part of FID non-zero) and
this was the real problem:

There is a know problem with the primitive file system used during
boot of OpenVMS Alpha where the primitive file system cannot locate
files whose file number is greater than 65536. This problem is solved
in several ALPAPB and ALPBOOT patches.

The customer did not had this fix installed.

We fixed the problem by copying MESSAGE_ROUTINES.EXE to a higher
version number. The new file had a file number < 65536. (after
the installation a purge was done). We tried a reboot but now the
system crashed with a bugcheck PROCGONE. After copying LIBRTL.EXE
to a higher version number the FID was < 65536. After this we
could reboot without any problems !!!

Summary:

-1- Any patch that installs a new loadable image may result in an
unbootable system. This will happen if the new loadable image
has a file number greater than 65536 and the "primitive file system"
patch (e.g. ALPBOOT06_062) is not installled.

-2- If the FID of MESSAGE_ROUTINES.EXE is greater than 65536
    the bootstrap will fail with:

    %EXECinit-E-LoadERR,error loading MESSAGES_ROUTINES.EXE status=00000044

-3- If the FID of LIBRTL.EXE is greater than 65536 the bootstrap will
    fail with:

    PROCGONE bugcheck

The note reported in .0 is *not* a problem with the 10K patch itself.
The 10K patch is valid, and should be installed.

Please see the 10k delta-time note (238.*) for a discussion of the
delta-time problem and the patch kits, and please see 238.194 for
a copy of 492.0, and a response covering some of the problems that
have been seen after installation of the patch kit.
