429.0. "VMS V7.1 upgrade renders DECnet-Plus inoperable" by THEBAY::WIEGLEB (Last day is May 2. Farewell!) Mon Apr 07 1997 21:23

    Just a warning to the unwary:  
    
    If you are running OpenVMS V7.0 (Alpha) with DECnet-Plus V7.1 (which is 
    a supported environment according to the DECnet-Plus SPD), and then 
    upgrade to OpenVMS V7.1, key DECnet files will be deleted from your 
    system by the VMS upgrade procedure, rendering DECnet inoperable.
    
    At least one file that gets deleted is
    SYS$LOADABLE_IMAGES:SYS$NETWORK_SERVICES.EXE.
    
    The problem can be resolved by re-installing DECnet-Plus after the
    upgrade.

   DECnet-Plus is normally (optionally) installed as part of the OpenVMS
   V7.1 upgrade.  When the upgrade completes -- if the DECnet-Plus kit is
   not selected during the upgrade -- *no* DECnet is present on the system.

    I read the following between the lines in .0
    
    he was running OpenVMS Alpha V7.0 and would normally have had
    DECnet/OSI V7.0, then the upgrade to OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 would also
    implicitely also upgraded DECnet/OSI to DECnet-Plus V7.1.
    
    I expect because he already was running DECnet-Plus V7.1, OpenVMS
    didn't upgrade because it figured that it was already at the right
    level.
    
    Unless you have de-selected DECnet-Plus during the upgrade, it should
    still be there (at least on my systems it was and is). I've run through
    lots of DECnet/OSI and DECnet-Plus cycles as well as OpenVMS upgrades
    and never have a problem that DECnet-Plus drops (I normally take the
    default answers)...

    To confirm:  I selected the default response "YES" when asked if I
    wanted to install DECnet-Plus.  The upgrade procedure noted (correctly)
    that it was already installed, but (incorrectly) managed to delete key
    images instead of leaving the current installation alone.
    
    FWIW, the other products (DECwindows, UCX) which were also already at
    the current version were not "de-installed" like DECnet-Plus was.
    
    I'll pursue this as a QAR/IPMT through the support center call I logged
    when I first encountered the problem.

Please do a PRODUCT SHOW HISTORY/FULL and a PRODUCT SHO PRODUCT/FULL
and post the output here.  (Note: 132 col format for /FULL)

Please identify the "key images" that were deleted.

    At least one "key image" was
    SYS$LOADABLE_IMAGES:SYS$NETWORK_SERVICES.EXE.  I'm not sure whether
    there were others, but when OSAK attempted to start after reboot under
    VMS V7.1 with the missing image(s), it crashed the system with SSRVEXCEPT.  
    I've requested the CSC have a look at the crash dump to gather further
    details.
    
    Here's the PRODUCT SHOW HISTORY/FULL and PRODUCT SHOW PRODUCT/FULL.  
    (I was surprised to find there was no /OUTPUT qualifier available for
    these.)
