    Hi!
    
    A customer has got problems initializing MO platters in his HP drive
    Formerly smaller platters where used without problems but now he
    tries to init 2*1,15GB platters and gets an (VAXVMS V6.2(-1H3))

    I had simmilar problems with initializing a raidset at another
    customer site.

    V6.2-1H3 only exists on OpenVMS Alpha, but given that there is a
    'PSL' in the trap info, I assume you talk about VAX, right?

    How about putting the disk size in some readable format - I can't tell
    what size disks you are really using.
    
    What drivers are being used to talk to the drive? 
    
    Are you sure that the media is not a) WORM, b) 1024 byte/sector?
    Both will cause the above problems.
    
    Note that the HP drive is not supported, though it may work. The
    Digital MO drives are only supported thru the use of OSMS/OSDS drivers,
    though again, they may work without them in some cases.

    Hi!
    
    I know that the drive isn't stated as supported in the SPD but here is
    some new behaviour.
    
    After installing the V7.1 compatibility patch the following
    can be reproduced at the customer site:
    
    DKB500 is the HP CD Drive
    
  INIT DKB500: xxx		    works fine so the patch did help
  BACKUP/IMAGE DKannn DKB500:       works fine 

  CREATE/DIR   DKB500:[TEST]        crashes the node reproducable

    You appear to be in an unsupportable position.  VMS doesn't appear
    to support the HP drive and the Digital optical product, OSDS, doesn't
    support that drive, "offically".
    
    If you want it to work in an "unsupported" manner then I suggest you
    install OSDS V3.3-1 and give it a try.  This was the last Perceptics/
    Digital version of the OSDS product that had support for the HP optical
    drive variants.  The latest OSDS product, V3.4, has had all the none
    RWZ optical drive support removed.
    
    The drop of support for HP optical drives is being reevaluated, maybe
    a e-mail or phone call to the OSDS product manager would help you out.

    Looks like the "7.1 compatibility patch" did not add a check for
    a legal number of cylinders; the geometry given would give
    93539 cylinders, too many to fit in a 16 bit word.
    
    The V7.1 driver on the other hand should have a fix that generates
    a geometry that will work if cyl count overflows.
    
    If you were to send a packack to the device and then put a virtual disk
    "over" it which would have its own geometry this might be a workaround.

    with the patch ?
    Will the problem be fixed if the customer grades up to VMS V7.1?
