381.1VAX Cross-Compiler for PC (on PC)?XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Mar 26 1997 08:4612

   Not that I am aware of. Have you checked the support and product
   databases, as well as the search engines? (See note 10.* for pointers.)

   (I can only assume you want a cross-compiler, as generating VAX native
   instructions on a PC is neearly useless.)

   There are/were OpenVMS cross-compilers that generate Intel code for
   execution on a PC.

    Or do you want a VAX instruction emulator to run on a PC? If so, what
    is the problem to be solved?

    I've never heard of such a beast and it would certainly run quite
    slowly compared with the current generation of real VAXen.
381.3VAX/Assembler on PCTAV02::KATZAVMon Mar 31 1997 14:129

    The customer is in one of the local universities. They teach VAX
    Assembler, and practice on VAX 11/785. Since there is allways a long
    waiting line they asked if there is a solution they can practice on
    PC's which are more available.
    Is there such a solution ??

    Thanks,
    Shimon.
381.4Adding Capacity To A 1.5 VUP Antique Is Easy...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringMon Mar 31 1997 15:0613
   You want a PC-based cross-compiler that generates VAX object code --
   I am not aware of such a package.

   I'd look seriously at upgrading that VAX-11/785 system -- your customer
   should be able to get an ancient MicroVAX or VAX or Alpha system with
   far more performance than that VAX-11/785 system. With that and some
   antique DECservers, the site should be able to get a massive increase
   in performance and capabilities, and will probably be able to afford
   the upgrade based on the electricity and maitenance savings alone...

   With a faster OpenVMS system, they can use the PC systems -- with the
   Affinity Packages (Enterprise Integration Packages) -- as clients.
