331.0. "VTX PAK No Longer Knows About VAX-VMS???" by FOUNDR::FOX (David B. Fox -- DTN 285-2091) Fri Mar 14 1997 09:14

    I just checked VTX PAK looking for a VAX-VMS PAK after upgrading a VAX
    system from V6.2 to V7.1. VAX-VMS is no longer on the PAK list! Did
    the unrestricted PAK name change while I wasn't looking? :-)

    	Thanks!

BASE-VMS-250136 PAK has taken the place of VAX-VMS on VAX. If the PAK is
unlimited, you won't require any of the *-USER VMS PAKs.

    Such an obvious name, NOT! Can you explain its derivation? What
    does 250136 represent? Max number of VPs? :-)

    What about somebody internally trying to install an older version
    of OpenVMS to reproduce a customer problem, etc. Where would they
    get a VAX-VMS PAK? I'm assuming that older version of OpenVMS
    wouldn't know about the BASE-VMS-250136 PAK.

I believe all the people responsible for this travesty have left the company.
Dave Maryanski, VMS Business Product Manager may have some inside information.

I believe it was a joke that got past the people that were supposed to catch it
and before anybody could do anything about it, it was too late.

Test PAKs can be obtained from Dan Daddieco (groove::pakman) or
http://groove.zko.dec.com/dan.html. He can generate any PAK you want.

Anything older than 5.5 (Magic) will not recognize BASE-VMS-250136.

Perhaps this will explain it:

SPD 25.01 .36: OpenVMS VAX Operating System, Version 5.5-2

331.7Possible problem with VTX PAK...DAVIDF::FOXDavid B. Fox -- DTN 285-2091Mon Mar 17 1997 13:426
    I heard from the VTX PAK folks today. There may be a problem with the
    non-royalty list causing VAX-VMS to be dropped. This is the first
    they've heard of this and are investigating. I'll let you know what I
    hear when I do...
