317.0. "UPdate VMS V6.2-1h3 on ALPHA 4100" by HGOSPS::MASCOTTANG () Thu Mar 13 1997 02:31

   I visited customer today, he performed an ALPHA VMS V6.2 upgrade to
VMS V6.2-1h3 on a ALPHA 1000 system, and then moved the system disk to
a ALPHA 4100 system. After that customer reboots the sytsem, it displays
the following error messages, and customer cannot read all disks.

    Because we have no ALPHA 1000 my site, we cannot prove customer actions,
but I shall use ALPHA 2100 to simulate the problem. Anyone has this
experience or an idea on it ? Any advice should be appreciated.

    Customer is using disk model is RZ28D-VW

    Did you run Autogen on the 4100?

317.2suspect problem in firmwareHGOSPS::MASCOTTANGThu Mar 13 1997 21:0211
    Yes. I did.

      I suspect that it is the problem in firmware. I simulate customer
    problem on my office. I upgrade VMS V6.2-1h3 on a ALPHA 2000 system,
    and then move the system disk to ALPHA 1000, I can only read system
    disk after system startup. I also try to use "sysman> IO auto" but it
    can't help on it. Under the console mode >>> SHOW DEVICE, I can read
    all disks. My customer is running firmware version 3.8.

      It is quite urgent on my customer site. Any advice on it ?

   Is the disk being swapped across different types of SCSI controllers?
   (Different SCSI controllers can use different formats for different
   disks, and disks are not necessarily "transportable" in the fashion
   you appear to be attempting..)

   The latest released firmware is often available at DIGITAL's web site.
   (The most recent firmware CD-ROM is V3.9, which has the Rawhide console
   version of/circa V4.8-5, while V3.8 has V3.0-10...)  The V3.9 CD-ROM kit
   was due to ship earlier this month. V4.8-6 (or later) is the latest
   console release.

   (Congradulations, you said the magic word) If it's urgent, IPMT it.

   However, this sounds like you're trying to work around the lack of a
   "remastered" V6.2-1H3 distribution kit. If so, get the official CD-ROM
   distribution kit from the Software Supply Business (SSB) (please see the
   low-numbered notes here, or VTX ATOZ, for SSB contact info), requesting
   a "priority shipment" of the kit.
