Hi all, i have been asked for make a review on a solution that a collegue of mine is going to install at a costumer site, but several questions poped up to my head when i saw the configuration and the reason i am posting this note is because i don't known the answer for them. So, the costumer has a VAX 4300 with VMS 5.5-2 and a INFOSERVER 1000 ( don't know the software client version, but i think it is an old one) and he is planning to buy an alphaserver, meanwhile the TK70 that he has connected to the VAX4300 is no longer enough to support the backups the costumer has to do. My collegue tried to arranged a solution for this problem and he came up with the idea of connecting a TLZ09 to the infoserver while the costumer don't receive the alphaserver. He tried to implement the solution but he has comed up with several problems: 1 - according to the person who went to the costumer to install this option, a pak (QL-0UVA9-AA) and a software in a CDROM format (QA-0UVAA-H8) is needed in order to enable the tape functions, althought the tape is seen by the infoserver as an TLZ09 (INFO> SH DEV FULL) My doubts are: 1- Althought the Infoserver 1000 client software v3.3 does not support the TLZ07 nor TLZ09, will the tape be recognized has a TLZ06 or a generic scsi tape, on the VAX side? 2- Is there any restrictions to this case, or something to be aware about? Thanks, NElsonR.

There is an InfoServer tape kit available for more recent versions of OpenVMS. (V6.2 and later.) If this customer is planning on migrating to an AlphaServer as your not alludes, I would most definitely upgrade the OpenVMS VAX version and the OpenVMS VAX compilers to current revision, and this work will also allow the customer to run a recent version of OpenVMS that has InfoServer tape support. I'd also look at either a KZQSA or an HSDxx before I'd use a TLZ09 out on an InfoServer. (While the InfoServer-TLZ09 approach likely works, it's going to be rather slower than a locally-connected tape drive.) | |||||

The TLZ09 is not supported on the InfoServer. It may well work. The client side will see it as "generic SCSI tape." The restriction here is "If it works, great. If it doesn't, it's not supported." All InfoServer tape support on the server [InfoServer] side requires an additional license and CD. The InfoServer shlould be running V3.4 of the kernel software if you're planning on trying this since anything earlier had a variety of tape-related bugs. (Well, little difference between V3.3 amd 3.4 but I'd run V3.4 to be sure.) There is an InfoServer client kit for support on V5.5-2. It's called CSCPAT_1128 and you *must* install it before you can use it on the client side. CSCPAT_1128 replaces all the previous ESS0xx client kits for VAX. On the Alpha side, you should check out the ALPLAD patch before attempting to use tape, especially if you're going to run less than V7.1. The InfoServer conference is at TAPE::INFOSERVER although since your question was primarily VMS client related, this is a good place to ask. --Doug (ex-InfoServer Dude) |
