276.0. "A volume set over 24 Gb in 5.5-2h4" by MDR01::GREGORIO (MCS Madrid) Tue Mar 04 1997 08:09

	Hello,

	I know the limit of disk space in 5.5-2h4 (8.5 Gb)

	But, I want to know if I can mount a volume set with four
	disks of 6.5 Gb.

	Thanks
	Goyo Fdez.

276.1Maximum volume limit per volume, not per volume setXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringTue Mar 04 1997 10:3022
   What you want to do should work -- the 8.5 GB limit is per volume, and
   not per volume set. (See VMSZOO::RMS_OPENVMS note 2824.*, and see the
   OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) monthly posting (available at
   ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/dec-faq/vms, among other places);
   the FAQ contains the answer to this and many other questions. Also
   become familiar with COMET (http://comet.alf.dec.com/) and the other
   support search engines...

   Personally, I would upgrade to a more recent OpenVMS release (V7.1 is
   current, and releases V6.0 and later can handle individual volumes up
   to 1 TB in size), and I would tend to use disk striping in preference
   to using a volume set.

   Caviets:
	o One cannot use a volume set as a system disk, and one must
	  avoid exceeding the system disk capacity limits imposed by
	  some system consoles. The VAXstation 3100, for instance.
	o Be aware that there are potentially applicable RMS patches
	  for the V5.5-2-vintage releases. Get and apply these from
	  http://www.service.digital.com/html/patch_public.html.
