153.0. "Paging Software" by OTOOA::GMACDONALD (Its badluck to be superstitious) Thu Feb 06 1997 14:52

Hi. I have a customer who is looking for software that runs under OpenVMS
that will allow a program or command procedure to dial a pager if there are
problems during their nightly batch run. Do any of you know of a product
that will allow them to do this?

Thanks. Grant.

PAGERPLUS. TARGET-ALERT (formerly DECalert). Information on both is
  available in VTX IR.

Note that the pager protocol (if you wish to supply parameters such as pager
id and text message) differs from country to country, possibly even telco to
telco. But perhaps you (in Canada, right?) use the same as the US (from
    where Steve responded).

PMDF Mail software (or whatever the exact trademark is) apparently includes
pager dialling as standard (so all you need to do is to send email in order
to activate the pager, sending the content of the email as the message).
This might be a sledge hammer if you don't already have it.

From Ergonomic Software get Rampage. FYI, it COMES with Boca modem, so
you're limited there. Their software seems only to require a Hayes
modem, and their line is that it's the paging EQUIPMENT that is the
limit for bits per second. (They also say that sending pages to SkyTel
one-way paging is an iffy proposition, but it worked FINE here; its
VMS-to-VMS, so why shouldn't it?) Anyhow, Rampage consists of several
"databases" that equate usernames and "real" names to a pager. It
makes it very easy to use with tools like PCM and Watchdog. Its neat
    stuff...

They do offer demo copies, and it's fairly easy to setup. The modem is
also part of the demo, but ya gotta send it back (you want 1200BPS?).

From experience, SOME pagers will not support paging thru anything BUT
specific Motorola gear. These seemed to mostly be the older kind of
numeric pager (i.e. Motorola Bravo) where you have a dedicated phone
number and no PIN. So, using a package like Rampage is useless (note:
This may be more a limitation of the equipment originating a page than
a limitation of the pager, so check with the provider).

there is a package called RUDEM (already in use on your home node,
OTOOA?) that will do it also. Contact Tim Dineley, system manager for
OTOOA and he should be able to steer you...

RamPage (mentioned in .3) has interfaces from MAIL, DCL, OPCOM, All-In-1,
DECwindows, SMTP, FTP, Print Queues, AUDIT, an environment sensing unit, a
RAMPAGE API, and others.

I helped them port from VAX to Alpha and they gave us a license. Neat stuff.
