117.0. "Incremental backups" by LISVAX::RIBEIRO_N (NELSON RIBEIRO @XIP) Thu Jan 30 1997 12:31

Hi,
i have been solving a few problems in a costumer's system and i found a few days
ago a very peculiar situation, that i will describe:

the costumer has a AS1000 4/266 witha few disks and a TLZ07, the ususally do a
total backup of the disks once a week and an incremental backup every day.
The problem is that the incremental backup copies all th einformation of the
disk regardless of the files who were backuped up a few days earlier and haven't
been touched.

I look for some articles on this and i found several, but these are just to try
to go around the problem (i have already tried one of the "solutions" and stayed
the same).
Does anyone known how to correct this problem?
Is there some kind of patch or ECO that i can aply into VMS v6.2 to solve this
problem?
Is there any kind of official note stating some problems with the backup utility?

Thanks,
NelsonR.

There have been several notes on this. If the customer is running
Pathworks, there is a particular feature which causes the MFD mod date
to be changed so that everything gets backed up (as I recall).

So take a look around and use the www pointers in earlier topics.

Or maybe you might want to give an example of the Backup commands used
for each particular type of Backup. Without those, it's a stab in the
dark to pass judgement on even the probability of an issue like this.

I'm also experiencing the same problem on 1 of 17 alphastations
running V6.2. I have tried backing up the 000000.dir/record
I've tried doing an image backup /RECORD. But no matter
what, backup seems to ignore the /SINCE=BACKUP switch.

    	Any ideas?

    	Thanx in advance,

Yes, read the release notes. And check the dates on the directory
files -- see something on this AlphaStation is causing BACKUP to
   pick up the directory.

Failing that, post a brief example of the BACKUP/IMAGE/RECORD command,
the time and date it was run, a DIR/FULL on the directory file(s)
involved, and a brief example of the BACKUP/SINCE=BACKUP, the time and
date it was run, and another DIR/FULL command.
