89.0. "7.1 Compatibility Kit REQUIRED?" by CSC32::K_DIMICK (Karen Dimick WFH (503)434-8693) Fri Jan 24 1997 18:35

    I have a customer with a VAX running 6.2 and an Alpha running 7.0 in
    a cluster. He would like to upgrade the Alpha to 7.1 and leave the VAX
    at 6.2. He has read the release notes that tell him that a
    compatibility kit should be installed when mixing these versions of VMS
    in a cluster. Is says "required", but if you read through the
    documentation on this kit, it keeps saying "enhancements". My customer
    has taken this to mean that it could be optional. I am looking for a
    definitive, "if you do not install this kit, this will break" or "if
    you do not install this kit, performance will suffer". Bottom line -
    will the cluster run without the kit? The cluster SPD talks to the
    support for the cluster mixed versions, but not to the "compatibility
    kit". I'm sure this issue will come up again and again as customers
    continue to receive the latest distribution and apply it to their
    cluster.  Thanks for your help.

89.1Install the Kit, It _Is_ RequiredXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringMon Jan 27 1997 09:444

    MOUNT and several other "low-level" components of OpenVMS were changed
    for V7.1, and this kit keeps mixed-version configurations working.
    You will want to install the kit. "Required" means "required".

    Ditto what Steve said. Without the compatibility kit, write-logging
    for shadowing will be turned off. Also, the compat kit contains a
    really important locking fix (which is also available in TIMA form).
    There are also potential SCSI device naming issues.

    It's required.

89.3reload required?KAHLUA::KBERRYKathleen Berry, dtn 225-5190Wed Mar 05 1997 10:5010

    The readme is not clear about whether a reload of the V6.2 systems
    is required or not after installing this kit.

    Would someone please clarify for me?

    Thanks,
    Kathleen

89.4Reboot required after install; rolling upgrade possibleXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Mar 05 1997 11:155

: is required or not after installing this kit.

   A reboot -- I assume that's what you mean by `reload' -- is required.

    Yep - that's what I meant...
