86.0. "Question on VMS Functionality" by CSC32::G_BURTT () Fri Jan 24 1997 09:29

Had an interesting question posed to me today.

Customer is looking for information on releases of OpenVMS VAX and Alpha
starting with 6.0 ... when did they become the same release functionally and
will they continue to be the same functionally. Just general information. The
technical info they will look in release notes, new features, cover letters etc..

thanks..

It was with V6.1 that "parity" was said to have been reached between the
platforms, though there were still a few differences. However, after that,
Alpha started to add features faster than VAX and this trend will continue.
There are some features that will likely never be made available on VAX, but
others will be implemented on both platforms. At the normal user programming
level, the two platforms will be very similar for a long time to come.

If you want a more complete statement, you should contact a product manager.

    The major area where one would expect Alpha to develop and VAX not is
    memory management e.g. 64 bit addressing.
