284.0. "scsi inquiry failed??" by MUNICH::REIN (How come holes in SWISS CHEESE??) Fri Jan 24 1997 01:14

    Hallo,

    A customer of us got TZ877 and MRU 1.1, and tried to work with it.

    He found the following misbehaviour:

    First all commands are working, but then, after mounting a tape,
    the show robot command came back with error messages:

    I asked him to switch on verbose and creating a log, and here is the
    result:

    [SYS0.SEPNETBCK] $ def mru_log lerr.log
    [SYS0.SEPNETBCK] $ def mru_verbose 1
    [SYS0.SEPNETBCK] $ @test
    $ ROBOT show robot gka501: drive 0
    DRIVE:          0               Empty
    $ robot load robot gka501: DRIVE 0 slot 2
    LOADING SLOT 2 into DRIVE 0 using ROBOT gka501:.
    $ mount/over=id $tape1
    %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, S00043 mounted on _SMU00$MKA500:
    $ dismount/nounload $tape1
    $ ROBOT show robot gka501: drive 0
    ROBOT gka501: is not responding: Robot communications error. SCSI
    INQUIRY
    failed
    $ robot unload robot gka501: DRIVE 0 slot 2
    UNLOAD DRIVE 0 into SLOT 2 using ROBOT gka501:.
    $ exit

    He is also reporting errors 3 errors on the tape device during the
    above operation.

    I will get the excerpt of the errorlog and will ask him to look
    for the tape firmware.

    kind regards

    Volker

	Show Robot and Unload follow the same basic path which can
	generate the Inquiry failed message. So, it looks like
	you have a timing problem. The /NOUNLOAD prevents the
	more serious timing problem, but have them wait a few seconds
	after the dismount before doing the show.
284.3upgrade to 6.2 fixed it!MUNICH::REINHow come holes in SWISS CHEESE??Mon Feb 10 1997 01:2416
    Hi,

    the problem is quite obscure,

    When I do first a "robot sho" command, all works,
    the mount command does it also, but then, when doing a "sho robot"
    command, we get a "scsi inquiry failed " and a scsi bus reset is done,

    the "show robot" which is set up a 2nd time works properly!

    Upgrading the system to VMS 6.2 fixed the problem!

    SEP could test the problem on another 6.1 AXp machine with the same
    result!
