471.0. "ABS 2.1 install needs SLS running on O'VMS 7.1!" by CRVETE::LENTZ (Peggy Lentz) Fri May 30 1997 16:56

    Environment: 2 Alpha 8400s clustered, separate system disks with one
    running OpenVMS 6.2-1H3 and one 7.1. I need to get ABS 2.1 running on
    the 7.1 system because SLS doesn't.

    But ABS needs SLS (or MDMS) installed. So I got brilliant and
    installed SLS 2.8a from my 6.2-1H3 system ON THE 7.1 SYSTEM DISK and
    SLS 2.8a is running happily on the 6.2-1H3 system.

    Today I installed Scheduler 2.1 on the O'VMS 7.1 system and then tried
    to install ABS 2.1 and got for my trouble:

        Archive/Backup requires SLS V2.4 or MDMS V2.5
        or greater to perform media and drive/robot management.
        The correct version is not installed or is not running.
        Please install SLS V2.4 or MDMS V2.5 or above before
        continuing this installation.
    %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of ABS V2.1 has failed.

    Well SLS is installed so how do I get it running when it won't?

    It's Friday afternoon and my mind must be fried -- I did search for
    a note that deals with my problem and the only one that came near
    seemed to be 409.1 -- basically stating the steps I thought I was
    doing.

    Help!

471.2it's O'VMS 7.1CRVETE::LENTZPeggy LentzMon Jun 02 1997 08:448
    That's right SLS is NOT running and it cannot because it's O'VMS 7.1.
    In fact, in desparation, I did try to start SLS (who knows, miracles
    can happen) and got an ident mismatch error message.

    So the question still stands, how do I get out of this apparent Catch
    22?

471.3What is the SLS version?COOKIE::HEISLERChris Heisler, ABS EngineeringMon Jun 02 1997 09:067
    Peggy,

    	What is the exact version of SLS that is running? Do a
    	storage show version on the V6.2 system to find out. We have
    	MDMS V2.8-E02 running on a V7.1 system here.

    	Chris
471.4MDMS only can be usedCOOKIE::HEISLERChris Heisler, ABS EngineeringMon Jun 02 1997 10:2315
    Peggy,

    	You cannot run full SLS on V7.1. You can only have MDMS
    	installed there. You can pull a copy of an MDMS that will
    	install on V7.1 from this directory:

    	COOKIE::AIM$PUBLIC:[ARCHIVE_BACKUP.KITS.ABSOMT_SSB]

    	There are MDMS kits and an eco which applies to MDMS or
    	SLS (SLSE02028.A). The MDMS kits are called MDMSOMT028.%.

    	Delete the SLS that you have installed on the V7.1 system,
    	then install these kits. This should work for you.

    	Chris
471.5Any way to start just MDMS from SLS install?CRVETE::LENTZPeggy LentzMon Jun 02 1997 14:0719
    Chris,

    >>	Delete the SLS that you have installed on the V7.1 system,
    >>	then install these kits. This should work for you.

    Ouch!! The customer is running the 6.2-1H3 machine in production and it
    is running SLS from the 7.1 system disk. I thought installing SLS caused
    MDMS to install. Is there any way to start just MDMS on my 7.1 machine
    from the SLS installation on the 7.1 system disk?

    >>  . . . an eco which applies to MDMS . . .
    My guess is the eco is important or you wouldn't have mentioned it --
    what does it fix?

    Thanks,

    Peggy

471.6SLS version is V2.8ACRVETE::LENTZPeggy LentzMon Jun 02 1997 14:126
    Chris,

    I read .3 and .4 out of order. Anyhow the SLS version is V2.8A based
    on the storage show version.

    Peggy
471.7No easy wayCOOKIE::HEISLERChris Heisler, ABS EngineeringMon Jun 02 1997 14:2215
    Peggy,

    	No, there isn't anyway to just start MDMS from a full SLS
    	installation. You'll probably have to move the SLS installation
    	to a disk on the V6.2 system. Then you can delete the SLS
    	on the V7.1 disk and install just MDMS over there.

    	Have you been running from that V7.1 disk for a long time,
    	or did you just start it up when you installed V2.8A there?

    	I wish I could give you some easy way to do this, but I don't
    	know of an easy way. V2.9 will support V7.1, but that is
    	still in field test.

    	Chris
471.8ECOCOOKIE::HEISLERChris Heisler, ABS EngineeringMon Jun 02 1997 14:2514
    Peggy,

    	The ECO is what brings it to V2.8A. There is an article in
    	TIMA (STARS) about the eco, if you want to read what it fixes.
    	Look for the title:

    *SLS] SLSE02028 Storage Library System for OpenVMS V2.8 ECO Summary

    	Oh, also, MDMS is a subset of SLS, but there is a lot more put
    	out there with SLS. When it is a full installation of SLS,
    	you are starting SLS with SLS$STARTUP. If it is only MDMS, then
    	it is starting SLS.

    	Chris
471.9Thank youCRVETE::LENTZPeggy LentzMon Jun 02 1997 14:497
    Chris,

    Gulp...

    Anyhow thank you for the answers, however unpalatable.
