463.0. "Dual Backups ?" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Alberto Yanguas) Mon May 19 1997 06:02

Hi,

Customer require the possibility of dual backups.
Actually they are doing dual backups (without any backup products, just
executing another backup after the first of the same files.

I would like to ask about the alternatives that can be offered when
using ABS.

I assume dual backup to two tape drives is a feature not yet
supported by ABS. Is it?

Would it be possible to have two simultaneous ABS save-requets running
doing backup from same files to two different tape drives ? Appart from
bottleneck reading disk files, would it be any problem about ABS configuration

or catalogs ?

What about Save-set manager funcionality boundled into ABS ? When ?

Regards

Alberto

    You can schedule multiple backups to be using different tape drives
    with ABS. You set the maximum_saves to be at least 2, and then
    create two save requests which will run at the same time. Each one
    will select a tape drive and volume and run. If they were backing
    up the same files, there may be conflicts on locked files.

    If you are using the same catalog, then it can get backed, up, but
    if you are using staging catalogs, then it can finish updating the
    catalog after the backups complete.

    There currently is not any SSM functionality built into ABS. We
    are suggesting that you create an epilogue to your save request
    which executes an SSM command if desired. If you have specific
    requirements for using SSM with ABS, please send that information
    to our product manager, Judy Cross (COOKIE::CROSS).
