398.0. "Any updates ?" by COMICS::MILLSS ("Jump! Jump now!" ...Kosh) Thu Apr 17 1997 09:43

Hi,

I've just had a customer log a call with the same stack dump but under different
circumstances. In his own words -

>We have a DEC 3000-300 running VMS 7.1 and UCX 4.1 ECO 2
>We've got some temporary PAKS for testing ABS v2.1 - what we want to do is use
>our VMS servers to back up NT systems. I've installed MDMS on to the Alpha
>followed by ABS. We can fire up the GUI interface but it keeps crashing out. It
>continually crashes on the 'Storage Class Retention' on the SAVE screen. I've
>looked at the Bookreader documentation and printed this off, but it all seems a
>bit dis-jointed. We've connected to the GUI interface via the Alpha console, a
>VXT and Exceed under Windows 3.1 - all with similar results. The NT client side
>has been installed on an NT 4 Workstation. I installed ABS from the latest CD
>distribution (ie. Mar 97).
>Am I missing something obvious here - we need to get this s/ware tested quickly
>if it's to be considered in an NT rollout backup strategy.

For completeness, I asked him for some more supporting information -

>as soon as I click on the retention period option, the
>ABS windows all disappear. The following are returned to
>the calling DECterm procedure :
>
>PGRV17::SYSCON>abs/inter=decw
>Exception Module Line
>Exception Reraised by: PABUI_XWINDOW 848
>Exception Reraised by: PABUI_MAINWINDOW 5028
>exception PABUI_MAINWINDOW 5137

As you can see, this matches the info given in the base note.

So, any ideas ?

Many thanks,

The original note was posted in note 398. I moved it to a new entry
since it did not look like it was exactly the same problem.

Thanks.

Can anyone offer any advice, though?

We have heard several occurance of GUI crashes at different point in
the past, but we cannot reproduce them. I have seen some crashes myself at
some point, but cannot reproduce them reliably.

We think there are some memory problems with the current GUI (probably
    some memory stomper).

We are planning to replace GUI to a whole new interface and code for
the next release, thus, we have no choice but to put minimal effort
    in maintaining the existing GUI.

Please try the feature you need using DCL.

437.4How is the SAVE being created?COOKIE::GONZALEZWed Apr 23 1997 09:5930
    Hi Simon,

As Masami mentioned we are in the process of replacing the current GUI
and are focusing our efforts in that direction. However, for the
current problem with the retention period there may be a way to work
around it from "within" the GUI without having to use DCL.

Let me ask a couple of questions here to get a better feel for how this
    crash is occurring.

There are a couple of ways to create a SAVE REQUEST, through the SAVE
button on the bottom of the screen or through the CREATE menu option.

I assume from the customer's description he is attempting to create a
SAVE REQUEST using the SAVE button at the bottom NOT through the CREATE
menu at top, is this correct?

If this is the case, has the customer attempted to create the SAVE
REQUEST using the CREATE menu option? If so, does the same problem
    occur when using that route?

Also what version of motif is the customer running?

With the current information I have been unable to reproduce the crash.
If there is anything the customer is doing other than just entering the
window and changing the retention period please let me know.

    Thanks, Mickey

Thanks for your input guys. I've passed your suggestions and queries on to the
customer and am now awaiting the results of his tests.

Thanks and regards,

Simon.

Looks like he has the wrong transport image(s) installed, would that cause this
problem?

Thanks again,

Simon.

Today's update :

1. He only uses the traditional flavour of Motif and not the new desktop. Don't
know if this is relevant but thought it was worth mentioning...

2. He's tried using all the transports apart from TCP/IP with the same results.

3. He can't explain why he has T6.2-961126 of the "DECwindows transport" - he
just did a V7.1 upgrade and this was what he was left with.

Any ideas or helpful suggestions, please?

Regards,

Simon.
437.8Taking a lookCOOKIE::GONZALEZMon May 19 1997 16:507
    Hi Simon,

Thanks for the information. I'll take a look and see if I can figure
something out that may be helpful

437.9Need more informationCOOKIE::GONZALEZTue May 20 1997 17:3551
    Hi Simon,

I'm having problems finding/reproducing this problem. So lets start
    from the beginning.

Can you please give me the command the customer is using to set
the display, such as set display/create/node=....

Can you please tell me the "exact" steps the customer is taking
from the moment they enter the gui? Please include the screen names and
    all buttons that are pushed.

So far everything I try seems to work just fine. I have been unable to
    cause the crash.

    Here's what we do know
      - DEC 3000-300 running VMS 7.1 and UCX 4.1 ECO 2
      - Setting display on an Alpha
      - We can fire up the GUI interface but it keeps crashing out.
      - It continually crashes on the 'Storage Class Retention' on the SAVE
        screen.
      - As soon as click on the retention period option, the ABS windows all
        disappear.

    Anything else?

Also on the information your just sent:

    >>1. He only uses the traditional flavour of Motif and not the new
    >>desktop. Don't know if this is relevant but thought it was worth
    >>mentioning...

      Should be no problem

    >>2. He's tried using all the transports apart from TCP/IP with the same
    >>results.

Which transports are you taking about here?

    >>3. He can't explain why he has T6.2-961126 of the "DECwindows
    >>transport" - he just did a V7.1 upgrade and this was what he was left with.

I have 7.1 installed on my machine and I get the same T6.2-961126
version so this shouldn't be anything causing GUI problems.

Hi Mickey,

Thanks for your help so far.

Local and LAT. Not sure if he's tried DECnet either, but I'll check along with
all the other info you requested.

Watch this space...

Thanks and regards,

Simon.
