409.0. "SLS-MDMS-ABS CLD query" by COMICS::MILLSS ("Jump! Jump now!" ...Kosh) Wed Mar 26 1997 08:59

Hello world !

Strange query from a customer... He had a problem with ABS V2.0 whereby it
claimed he had no execution environments or storage classes setup. It turned out
that the installation of ABS hadn't completed successfully. We got him to
re-install properly and all now works as expected.

However, he now goes on to say that with the installation sequence of SLS, MDMS,
ABS he noticed that the SLS commands such as STORAGE SAVE were undefined. He
assumed this was because MDMS installed its own cut-down version of the STORAGE
command. I tend to agree - this is the case, isn't it ?

He wants to be able to use SLS to save and restore until he has fully understood
ABS, so he extracted the full CLD file for SLS from the installation kit and
installed it, whereupon the STORAGE SAVE command now seems to work.

The bottom line now, is this OK, or might there be any problems with this ?

I've told him that I think it'll be OK but thought I'd try and get a more
knowledgeable answer.

Many thanks for your help and/or advice.

Simon,

The correct installation sequence for concurrent usage of ABS and SLS is :
1) Install SLS. This includes MDMS.
2) Install DECScheduler
3) Install ABS

If you install in this sequence, you won't have the problem you described.
Please let the customer re-install SLS and ABS in the sequence above described.

Hans,

Thanks for your quick response(s)! I've passed this on to the customer and he'll
probably be trying this out after the Easter break, next week.

I'll post the outcome here if I remember. I promise I'll try !!!

Regards,

Simon
