401.1Did they save with compression?COOKIE::HEISLERChris Heisler, ABS EngineeringMon Mar 17 1997 12:3413
    Ted,

See if you can get a full listing of the SAVE and RESTORE requests.

We are thinking that they may have saved it compressed (I think
that the -Z in the command on the save does a GZIP compress),
and that they didn't restore with the compression turned on.

At this point, you can only set the compression on the restore
with the GUI. There is not a /compress option in the restore
from DCL. The default is none.

    	Chris

401.3a couple of things to look at/tryCOOKIE::LEWISFri Mar 21 1997 14:4071
Hi Ted,
I've looked over the tar code and it looks like tar is having a problem
reading the .tar file (the saveset).

Do you know what version of ABS they are running, and what version of unix.

A couple of observations. First, we do not advertise that we can back up
oracle databases. This may be a problem.

Some things to try.

First, eliminate ABS from the picture. You can do this by having the user
just run the ABSgtar image on the unix machine. They can try the exact
same command that we send to the unix machine, and instead of the output going
to stdout, have it go to a file. Then they can try and read that tar file,
still on the unix box. The commands that ABS sends to the unix box can be
found in the log file. They start with (in his log file)

$ ubs n?FINTST u?"root"...
The actual ABSgtar command (from the users Restore session) is

  ABSgtar -xpb20 --same-owner -Z -C /usr/users/bailey_k -f
                 -/usr/users/oracle/rfs.dmp

the options indicate
-x extract from the tar file
  p same permissions
  b20 block size 20 (20 x 512 bytes)
 --same-owner restore with same owner
-Z filter through compress (unix compression)
-C change to a new directory (change to /usr/users/bailey_k) (only supported
                                                               on ABS 2.1)
-f the archive filename (since nothing is specified, stdin is used, and
abs "pipes" the info from the vms server to stdin for this
              process)

For example, the user should try
  ABSgtar -cv --same-owner -f/usr/tmp/test_gtar.tar /usr/users/oracle
(see below on the restore if they get an error here about leading / )
This should create a tar file called /usr/tmp/test_gtar.tar

They can then try

  ABSgtar -xv --same-owner -f/usr/tmp/lewis_tar.tar /usr/users/oracle/rfs.dmp

(if they got an error above about removing leading / then use
                                                     usr/users/oracle/rfs.dmp

They can try the same save and restore as above only use the native tar.

tar -cv -f/usr/tmp/lewis_tar.tar /usr/users/oracle
(the -cv says "create verbose, so it creates the tar lewis_tar.tar and
lists all of the filenames as it puts them in the tar.)

then to "untar" do
tar -xv -f/usr/tmp/lewis_tar.tar /usr/users/oracle/rfs.dmp

Have them try these and see if any of them work. This will eliminate ABS, and
will eliminate the tape drive.

They could also try just copying the file from the tape, then ftp it to the
unix machine, then ABS"untar" it on the unix file. They would mount the
tape, then copy the file specified in the log file (in their case
18MAR19971511293. (you can mount the tape and do a dir to verify the filename).

If this doesn't make sense, let me know (send mail or give me a call)

(I think the problem may be the oracle files. Have them try NON oracle files)

Shouldn't we be able to back these up just as ordinary files? Unless UNIX
handles these files differently.

I will have him try your suggestions.
