381.0. "ABS-OMT Questions." by CX3PST::BSS::SAUL () Mon Feb 17 1997 16:09

Hi,

I have a customer attempting to use the ABS-OMT package and has come up with
some questions I can't answer.

1). Is there some authorization that the NT machine does to allow a VMS system
to back it up?

2). Possibly related to #1, he tries to restore a disk and gets "access
denied". It appears that its the directories that can't get created because he
can restore individual files.

3). Will ABS backup up Macintosh files on the NT machine. Evidently these
files can have a non-standard format.

4). How soon will ABS be able to backup open files such as the registry, SQL
files etc.

5). Catalog lookups for NT files can't use wildcards right? If not, any idea
when this will be made available?

This customer is really motivated to use the product so hopefully we can get
him going. Thanks for your help.

1). Is there some authorization that the NT machine does to allow a VMS system
to back it up?

>> Yes, but it is limited. The NT system will only allow the VMS server that
>> was specified during the NT client SETUP. Requests from all other nodes
>> will be rejected. In addition, the communications protocol between the
>> client and server is such that the process requesting the SAVE request is
>> ABS.
>>

2). Possibly related to #1, he tries to restore a disk and gets "access
denied". It appears that its the directories that can't get created because he
can restore individual files.

>> The NT Client runs in the context of the LocalSystem account which is where
>> system services run. Because of a limitation with open files, there are
>> instances when the RESTORE operation cannot create directories because the
>> directory in which the directories are to be created is open, such as with
>> Explorer. Might this be the case? If we were able to SAVE the directories
>> and there contents, we should be able to RESTORE them.
>>

3). Will ABS backup up Macintosh files on the NT machine. Evidently these
files can have a non-standard format.

>> I'm afraid that I cannot answer that question at this time. How are these
>> files hosted by the NT system? What I mean here is are the files stored
>> on NT in a fileshare and accessed by Macintosh via LANMAN or network file
>> system? We use standard Win32 calls to access file and security information.
>> If more would be required then we don't do it at this time. Is this a big
>> requirement?

4). How soon will ABS be able to backup open files such as the registry, SQL
files etc.

>> Hopefully in the timeframe of the next release for registry and open files.
>> SQL probably later. Contact Judy Cross, COOKIE::CROSS for more information.

5). Catalog lookups for NT files can't use wildcards right? If not, any idea
when this will be made available?

>> Not sure. Again let Judy know of your requirements.

Ted,

Both open file backup (including the registry file) and the use of wildcards
in a catalog lookup are on the list for the next release. It's a long list and
we haven't committed to a specific set of functions yet. Stay tuned.
