25.1Soon now....SNOFS1::PENNYSIMONSimon Penny - Storage BS, Sydney, AustraliaMon Jun 02 1997 03:5215
    I heard that England have recalled Dev (Malcolm not Kapil) for the
    squad for the 1st Test. England have their best chance for years to
    put up a competitive performance, given the morale problems in the
    Aussie side and the woeful lack of bowling penetration. This contest
    may actually provide some really interesting moments

    All I have to do now is swap my Foxtel hook up (from the Aus v RSA
    series) for an OptusVision hook up and I'll be ecstatic (won't have
    to rely on the shameful excuse for coverage being dealt up by Packer's
    Channel 9)

    Roll on Thursday at 8pm (rain permitting of course)

    Cheers,
    Simon
25.2Eyes down...SNOFS1::PENNYSIMONSimon Penny - Storage BS, Sydney, AustraliaThu Jun 05 1997 08:4923
    Australia have announced the following team

    Tubby
    Elliot
    Mark Waugh
    Steve Waugh
    Blewett
    Bevan
    Healy
    Kasper
    Warne
    Gillespie
    McGarth

    Langer (12th)

    So, Tubby will have another crack and no place for Langer (deplorable),
    Ponting or Slats (unfortunately). Could be a good contest, but
    Australia really could do with a bit more stike power in the bowling
    department. The cupboard is pretty bare should a bowler break down

    Roll on tonight!

25.3Weather may save Tubby!WOTVAX::lzodhcp-182-48-102.lzo.dec.com::hiltong[email protected]Thu Jun 05 1997 11:234
Following 2 weeks of sun, rain's on it's way and may play a
significant part in this first test. :^(

    Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land,

    etc, etc

    I've been waiting 10 years for this so I better get my local gloating
    in before the rain comes and the Aussies win the next 5 tests on the
    trot!!

    Great performance by the bowlers (esp Gough and Caddick) and a good bit
    of late slogging from Warnie. What a crap pitch though.

    I thought that Hussein and Thorpe (esp Hussein) batted very well even
    though the conditions had calmed down a bit. Australia are in an even
    bigger hole now that Dizzie has done a hammy. Their bowling cupboard
    is very bare (as I mentioned before)

    England closed at 200-3 and it appears that only the weather could stop
    them winning from here. Lets hope for 4 dry days (maybe only 2
    required)

    Simon
25.13well well well a bit unexpected.SNOFS1::NANCARROWFri Jun 06 1997 09:217
    But the big question is has Tubby done the trot or will he use the
    pitch for an excuse ?? If atherton has any sense he will declare at
    300 and let the Aussies fight it out if the weather looks a chance.
    What a decision Tubby won the toss too, maybe his captaincy is out of
    from too!!

25.20a declaration today??WOTVAX::dhcp41.olo.dec.com::milespFri Jun 06 1997 16:594
Excellent day, class batting from Hussain and Thorpe

perhaps Atherton will declare to let us bowl flat out for the last hour of
the day?? Might be worth a few 2nd innnings wickets tonight.
