Not sure if Lara has ever been No 1 but I think you are a little
"Oz-Centric" in calling him a one innings wonder!

Mike's problem is that we have just seen Lara go thru summer here in Oz
and he looked pathetic and the whole time we had Tony Greig caling him
the "prince" which is really silly as he has a lot to prove to the Oz
team. We really destroyed his averages this summer and he whinged and
whined the whole summer.
As for the best batsman of all time I think it's a tossup between
Border or Boycott. Not that I think they could win a match like the
Waugh boys but if I had to have someone bat and make 50 runs to save my
life I'd feel happy these guys could do it.
For flamboyance, Tendulkar, Gower, M.Waugh, RRichardson, V.Richards,
I.Chappell or Walters .......on "their day".

| Actually I do not consider it a problem but pride in the national team.
As for Lara has he ever scored big against a strong team i.e. Pakistan
Australia and South Africa. Do not forget the world record was against
a weak English bowling lineup on a Flat track.
AS for Steve Waugh he has scored big against all-comers and so has
Tendulkar to my knowledge.
Lara's average must be pretty interesting at the moment with a good
case of dropsy.

20.4 | how do they do it ??? | SNOFS1::NANCARROW | | Thu Mar 06 1997 03:45 | 5 |
| I wonder how they can calculate the top batsman and bowler when there
is significant difference in the quality of teams. If based on averages
then somebody could go to the top on test series against England and
New Zealand. Perhaps it should be based on the last 4 years efforts.

Mike,
How quickly we forget Lara's BIG score at the SCG on the previous tour
which is why he called his baby Sydney.
I think it was 279 or something like that, and it was against us , not
those pretender poms :^)
Check the Coopers and Lybrand web cricket site for how they calculate
it :

| Yeah I remember but I think I might get a copy Wisden and have a look
at when and where he scored his runs, particularly in the past two
years or so.
