England won the 2nd test by an innings and 68 runs. Thorpe was MOTM for
his 108 but Gough was perhaps more deserving as he took nine wickets.

| Nice to see a win but so we should against a plucky but weak test side.
It would be a real pity if the short term euphoria means that fundamental
reforms are ignored. Can't see the counties allowing the necessary changes
to happen though.
The Ashes next summer will be a different proposition to NZ and I do now feel
the time has come for Atherton to step aside and another captain take over.

Re. Another captain - who, though?
I quite agree about the fundamental changes - this has been a
particular bug-bear of mine for some time. Every test victory (about
one in eight) is referred to as "a turning point" and treated as an
excuse to do nothing.
