372.0. "Moving large datasets quickly" by SLOVAX::NEWMAN () Mon May 12 1997 15:16
We have foudn a customer who needs to move 20MB/sec from the back-end
sql server database machine to the front end windowsNT client.
Since I have very little experience with NT moving anything very big
and very fast, I need someone to answer the following questions:
Ex: I have a large dataset on the server that I must deliver to the
client as quickly as possible.
1. What is the fastest supported interconnect for windowsNT and sql
server (Gigabit isn't done, OC12 650Mbits/second requires ATM, 100Mbit
Ethernet or FDDI). Here is a great reason for Memory Channel Support!
2. Now that I have chosen the fastest interconnect above, how long will
it take to actually move 1 or 2 GBytes of data between the two
machines.
3. Is there an Intel / Alpha preference in this workload? Don't care,
just as long as they buy Digital.
Thanks,
Sandy
