14.0. "Actual projects?" by BIS1::GOULDEN () Wed Feb 12 1997 12:10

I am interested in hearing about any actual projects particularly those
projects that have been fully completed. I am interested in hearing at
what level did Digital get involved and in general where was most of
the time spent. I am interested in hearing about real life experiences
about both external project (you can withhold the name of the company,
if you want) and internal projects. I also interested in anyone who
has actually signed a contract to supply services.

    Enterprise analysis
    ------------------
Has anyone done a full complete Enterprise analysis for a company?
(i.e. done a complete survey of hardware systems and software systems)

    Triage
    ------
Did you make any decisions to abandon systems? or replace entire
systems with new technology? or renovate?

    Impact assessment
    -----------------
Has anyone done a full impact assessment?
What languages, which scanning tool was used, how many lines of code?
What percentage of code was affected?

    Renovation
    ----------
What renovation technique was used Windowing or Field expansion? Did
you outsource to a solutions company or did you do the work in house?

    Testing
    -------
    How did you test?

My problem is I known of many non-year 2000 complaint systems but I
known of very few practical examples of companies that are even part
way through the compliance process. In my experience most companies are
thinking about it or are still in the process of talking to vendors.

14.1Re actual project workSIOG::FARRELLYFri Mar 07 1997 15:0642

In the Dublin office we seem to be somewhat ahead of the Digital game in that
we have been and are involved in various stages of Year 2000 projects.

A team has already completed a comprehensive Y2K assessment of a
Government department here (Irish Department of Social Welfare) and in
fact this assessment also looked at the impact of the proposed European
Single Currency on the site (although the emphasis was on Y2K).

In terms of the Y2k assessment our team inventoried and assessed
hardware, networks, PCs, system software and application code. The
site was purely Digital from a mainframe point of view. There were
6,000,000 lines of VAX COBOL on the site as well as DECforms, ACMS,
    TDMS, etc etc.

In addressing the COBOL 3GLS we used the Piercom DIA2000 toolset and to
help automate other language assessment the team developed a scanning
tool (LEON) on the project which has been subsequently developed for
other projects. The team also developed an important inventory tool
(TRAC2K) which is based on a MS ACCESS engine.

These tools and others have been developed further for other Y2K
projects we are currently carrying out - 2 of these projects are for
major Irish customers while another 2 are pilots for large US banks. We
also have several more projects in the pipeline.

We have set up an assessment centre here in Dublin and we have carried
out Y2K delivery training for corporate. We are also now the Y2K tool
    assessment centre for corporate.

We are assisting other territories in winning Y2K business and also in
setting up their own assessment centres. There is so much work out
there it is vital that other centres are set up quickly or Digital
should not be in this business.

As far as we know, nobody has carried out significant implementation and
testing work in the Digital environment. We are currently carrying out
test of concept work for implementation as we will be faced with carrying out implementation
    work in the near future.
