| | Hello,
Our customer, Hong Kong Jockey Club has a few systems running VAX/VMS V5.5-2.
They want to know whether VAX/VMS V5.5-2 and the layered products will be
year-2000 compliance. Since they are doing a rewrite of all applications
running on Digital UNIX, they have no intension to upgrade these systems to
higher release. But their new systems won't be all available before year 2000.
I checked all their layered products against the Year 2000 Product Status list
dated 8-Apr-1997, such as PSI Access 4.3, FMS 2.3, CMS 3.4, C 3.1, UCX 3.1, etc.
No doubt, I won't be able to find any of their layered products(name+version)
shown on that list.
In fact, all their VAX/VMS V5.5-2 systems are under so called "Best Effort
Support" in Hong Kong MCS.
So, I need the advice from Engineering that what I can tell my customer. Or
do you know where I could get help from within Digital for this circumstance.
There are in fact quite a few large customers in Hong Kong having the similar
situation. Please help.
Thanks for any help,
Cecia

For the official statement, contact the Year-2000 product manager.
All OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 systems -- world-wide -- are supported only
under a "prior version support" contract.
I am aware of no plans to "certify" OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 as Year-2000
compliant, though there is a reasonable chance OpenVMS engineering
will backport any fixes made to the "certified" releases as far back
as this V5.5-2 release. This backporting effort will likely occur
after the availability of the "certified" OpenVMS releases.
I would encourage the customer to perform the recommended testing
procedures, as called out in the OpenVMS Year-2000 home page.

We are actually discussing the effort for a year 2000 investigation on VMS V5.5-2.
You may want to check note 68 for some interesting contributions.
When dealing with partners and customers, our official postion is that we are
evaluating the feasibility of a Year 2000 due diligence on VMS V5.5-2, and that we
are planning to make a definitive decision in June. If the decision is postive,
we also expect this effort to take place in calendar year 1998.
