145.0. "Client versions to exist with 3.2?" by SNOC02::DEGROOT () Wed May 28 1997 07:53

    A customer is in the planning stages to upgrade to LinkWorks 3.2 on
    their servers. They are currently running 3.0

    What are the option for upgrade in terms of the client systems (Windows
    3.11) running LinkWorks 3.0 client.

    Since they have a large number of clients they would have to do
    it in stages. Should they upgrade the clients first (does 3.2 client
    work with 3.2 server?) or upgrade the servers first (does 3.0 clients
    work with 3.2 servers?)?

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul deGroot

    Paul,

    There is a major difference between 3.0.8 and 3.2.2, therfor it is
    impossible for 308 clients to work with 322 servers and the othe way
    around.

There is a little more to say about this.

First you could install all clients in another directory and still use
the 3.0.8 clients. Then if all clients are installed, you can upgrade
the server(s). The catch 22 is that the apodll32.dll is always in the
\windows\system directory, so APO applications won't run anymore.

You might reduce the installation effort by installing LinkWorks on
a network drive. LinkWorks has an lnx.upd file that updates the registry
when you click on lnx.exe.

Yet another possibility is to use SMS. LinkWorks supports installation
using Microsoft SMS.
