3989.0. "DECdns Server on a VAX-VMS" by KISNET::BERENGUIER () Fri Jun 06 1997 10:59

Hello,

OK DECdns doesn't on an Alpha OpenVMS but i now,
i want to create a DECdns server on a VAX OpenVMS V7.1

But when i follow the the documentation in the
DECdns Management Guide, in 10-16 page, i was enable to
	create it.

	1) the installation of the DECdns doesn't create the
DNS$SERVER directory Why? 0.5 day to search why
	   it doesn't configure.

	2) in the 10-17 page the following procedure doesn't
function, invoke the decnet_register to maneg the
	   directory and follow directions,
but in the LOCAL namespace we haven't authorization
to use and if i configure another namespace, it is
	   not already created.

By the NET$CONFIGURE procedure, i have created the
a new namespace and the server has been started,
but when i invoke the decnet_register after and i select
1 - Show information about registered node names

there is no respond from any informations and after many time
	The system crash.

On the reboot, it start the DECdns server process, and it
stay on this line on the screen, and the boot is hang.

Please help me on the procedure to create a new namespace.

Thanks Michel.

Wrong conference ... this should be discussed in the DNS conference.

The mentioned problem with the missing dns$server directory is already
    logged their.
    ...
It seems you've created a NS but - you havn't setup the system with the
    needed sysgen params :

For DNS you need enough GBLPAGES free, GBLPAGFIL (not too high ;-) )
    NPAGEDYN / PAGEDYN /
you should set VIRTUALPAGECNT two times the sysgen recommends
    you should use MAXBUF 32000

    BUT
if you never have worked with DNS before and never been at any
DNS training ... you should NOT create a new NS !
Even if you get the frist steps you will run into access control
    problems and questions ...

A new NS needs a structure planned / access control planned /
replication planned ... before you create the first (the root)
    directory.
