3941.0. "show net on V7.1 not showing decnet info" by GIDDAY::CHONG (Andrew Chong - Sydney CSC) Wed Apr 23 1997 01:06

I believe that the command sho network should show decnet if it is installed.
This works for Open VMS V7.0 and DECnet/OSI V7.0

NACCEA_MGR>sho net

Product:  DECnet/OSI    Node:  NACCEA               Address(es):  59.842

However, on VMS V7.1 and DEcnet/OSI V7.1 , this does not work

$ sho net

Product:  TCP/IP        Node:  bhppr2.cshare.com.au Address(es):  203.2.132.14

Are you sure someone hasn't replaced the standard SHOW NET with something else?

I just tried this on a 7.0 system and got what I expected:

$ show net
%NETWRK-E-NOAVAILABLE, network service information is unavailable at this time

As far as I know, SHOW NET has never worked for DECnet/OSI or DECnet-Plus,
unless OpenVMS Engineering has been doing some playing.

Sure it does...

 show network

Product: DECNET Node: FUNYET Address(es): 7.944
Product:  TCP/IP        Node:  funyet.mro.dec.com   Address(es):  16.34.176.20

So what's different about your system vs. my system?

Here's the 7.0 system I tried:

                image name: "SHOW"
                image file identification: "X-1"
                image file build identification: "X65G-SSB-0000"
                link date/time: 29-NOV-1995 23:48:28.04
                linker identification: "A11-20"

As regards the base note, you'll probably get a better answer to this from the
VMS conference, since it's functionality provided by OpenVMS and not DECnet-Plus
(I'd be curious to hear what you find out though).

I'm running OpenVMS Alpha V7.1.

        On mine (OpenVMS V7.1, DECnet/OSI V7.1, UCX V4.1-4, DEC
        3000-300X) intially $SHOW NETWORK gave only TCPIP information.
        But after

        $ @sys$startup:sys$net_services

$ show net

Product:  TCP/IP        Node:  veli.fno.dec.com     Address(es):  16.181.128.4

Some decided that since SHOW NET didn't display anything useful, and probably
got tired of answering SPRs and QARs about it, they stepped back and said
"what should SHOW NET show?". The answer was, it should show information
about the network whether the network was DECnet, OSI, TCP, tin cans and string,
AND that what it shows should not depend on whether the network product
came from DEC or not.

P$ show network

Product:  TCP/IP        Node:  pisgah.nio.dec.com   Address(es):  16.135.32.244
Product: DECNET Node: PISGAH Address(es): 39.876
Product: Tin cans and string Node: phil's house Address(es): 17 Elm

3941.7Release notes?? What are those??RMULAC.DVO.DEC.COM::S_WATTUMScott Wattum - FTAM/VT/OSAK EngineeringThu Apr 24 1997 14:263
Hey, that's pretty neat. But the product name is incorrect for 7.1.

In sys$net_services_decnet.com it should be called DECnet-Plus, not DECnet/OSI.
