3925.0. "ACMS not supported on DECnet-Plus and TCP/IP" by MEO78A::BARNHOORN (Barney to his friends) Wed Apr 09 1997 00:25

I'm working with a large Australian customer that has accepted the
DECnet PLUS (DECnet/OSI) using TCP/IP strategy, and from the SPD
(relevant parts listed below) are using DECnet Applications over TCP/IP.

We (the customer and Digital NSIS) have migrated a number of systems
to DECnet/OSI, with TCP/IP as the transport.

(I've had other questions 3899 and 3895, and worked around them)

The customer is also a large user of ACMS, and since migrating some
of the systems to DECnet/OSI, ACMS has been doing weird things.

such as ACMS links seem to remain on BackEnd systems, id the Front End is down.

The customer logged an ACMS call and the following was returned from ACMS
engineering.

There exists the capability of running DECnet protocols
on top of TCP/Ip. While this may be 'transparent',
this has not been tested. Until this is done, ACMS
does not support DECnet on IP. The SPD will
        reflect this.

The customer is obviously very concerned as their strategy is to use TCP/IP
as the transport and have invested heavily in this area.

Who do we need to contact in DECnet/OSI-Plus Engineering comment, direct
questions to?

thanks

Mark.

"DECnet-Plus for OpenVMS features include:

o The ability to run DECnet and OSI applications over TCP/IP transports.
   ....
o An NCP (Network Control Program) emulator to facilitate installation
of layered products written for DECnet Phase IV.

       ....

Transport Layer

DECnet-Plus for OpenVMS provides support for:

o OSI Transport protocol as specified in ISO 8073

o RFC 1006 and RFC 1859 to allow DECnet and OSI applications to run
   over TCP/IP

o Network Services Protocol (NSP)

NSP, RFC 1006, and OSI transports support communications between
DECnet, TCP/IP, and OSI systems. NSP provides backward compatibility with
Phase IV DECnet systems.

RFC 1859 support for DECnet applications is provided by a kernel
interface that is implemented on all TCP/IP stacks available for use on
the OpenVMS operating system. The supported applications include all
licensed DECnet applications as well as layered products and user-written
applications that conform to the documented DECnet programming
interfaces.

    ...

Applications

Transport Options for Applications

You can run applications written to the DECnet upper layers over NSP,
OSI, or TCP/IP transports using RFC 1006 and RFC 1859. This includes
the network applications that are licensed with DECnet-Plus as well
as user-written applications that adhere to the documented DECnet
programming interfaces. The use of TCP/IP transports using RFC 1006 and
RFC 1859 does not require any modification to the existing application.

3925.1DECnet over TCP and ACMS are working togetherDELNI::KARTENThu Apr 10 1997 10:2711
I spoke with both Bill Hall (ACMS Engineering) and Jim Ferguson, the
ACMS Product Manager, concerning both the customer situation and the
testing of ACMS and DECnet/OSI. It is my understanding that the
customer problem was resolved by upgrading to the latest version of the
TCP/IP stack that was offered by the vendor. Jim is pursuing the
issue of testing ACMS with DECnet, but we expect that these products
    will work together.
