3893.0. "DNVOSI V6.3-ECO06 & DECdns-Server problem" by ZUR01::SCHNEIDER (Kurt Schneider, SW-Support Zurich) Thu Feb 27 1997 05:27

    Hello,

    	I tried to setup a dual-DNS-Server test-environment. For this
    I installed on VAX/VMS V6.1 DNVOSI V6.3-ECO06 and DECdns ECO 70
    and on the second node I did the same on VAX/VMS V6.2.

    The new created namespace could not be accessed because of
    clerk-timeout; means it could not be completely created by
    NET$CONFIGURE ADVANCED. To work around this problem I tried to
    downgrade to DECdns ECO 65 - no success!

    Finally I reinstalled DECnet/OSI V6.3 without any DNVOSI ECO;
    with the result that DECdns-Server could be created without problems.
    I did this in three ways and all of them worked.

    1) DECnet/OSI V6.3 only (corresponds to DECdns ECO 60)
    2) DECnet/OSI V6.3 with DECdns ECO 65
    3) DECnet/OSI V6.3 with DECdns ECO 70

    	As the next step I will try to use my "trusted" ECO5+ which
    I was using successfully at one of my larger customer-sites.

    (I did this installation in our lab, and as a consequence I'll
     advise my customers to NOT install DECnet/OSI V6.3-ECO06 on a
     DNS-Server node)

    I used DEC-VAXVMS-DNVOSIECO06-V0603--4.PCSI;1 5-DEC-1996 10:19:45.00

    Regards
    Kurt

            DECnet/OSI for OpenVMS ADVANCED network configuration procedure

    This procedure will help you create or modify the management scripts
    needed to operate DECnet on this machine. You may receive help about
    most questions by answering with a question mark '?'.

    You have chosen the ADVANCED configuration option. This option enables
    you to do some specific tailoring of your system's network configuration
    by answering some specific questions. If you do not want to do specific
    tailoring of your system's network configuration but instead want to
    quickly configure your system using most of the default answers, you
    should invoke NET$CONFIGURE.COM with the BASIC configuration option, ie:
                     @SYS$MANAGER:NET$CONFIGURE BASIC

    * Do you want to continue? [YES] :
         Checksum file updated last by SYSTEM on 27-FEB-1997 09:10:25.68

    %NET$CONFIGURE-I-VERCHECKSUM, verifying checksums
    %NET$CONFIGURE-I-USECOMMON, using cluster common APPLICATION script
    %NET$CONFIGURE-I-USECOMMON, using cluster common EVENT script
    %NET$CONFIGURE-I-USECOMMON, using cluster common MOP_CLIENT script

            The following NCL script files have been modified since being
            created by this procedure:

                    SYS$SPECIFIC:[SYSMGR]NET$SEARCHPATH_STARTUP.NCL;
                    SYS$COMMON:[SYSMGR]NET$MOP_CLIENT_STARTUP.NCL;

            This procedure may create a new version of these scripts or
    modify
            information contained within them. In all cases, any previously
            created NCL scripts are renamed to "file.NCL-OLD", so that you
            may review any of your previous changes.

Kurt,

From your note I am not sure whether you searched the conference for any
potentially related articles, or whether you did find note 3879.0 ...

Anyway, perhaps you would like to look at and let me know whether it might
be relevant.

Regards,

	John

3893.2DRAGNS::SAUNDERSThu Feb 27 1997 11:2011
I noticed in the log you provided that you had several errors relating to the
fact that you already had a DNS server running on this node. Perhaps you should
try this again with the DNS server shut down. In fact, it might be a good idea
to do this sort of network configuration with DECnet shut down.

If you can, please try it again without the DNS server, and let us know if that
works.

Thanks,
John Saunders

3893.3Problem loading Routing ?BULEAN::OLSONThu Feb 27 1997 13:4616

      Kurt,

      The log looks like there was some kind of problem with loading
    LES and routing, possibly a problem as a result of doing a network
    shutdown then the config/start ??

    Anyway I would definately expect a crash on shutdown if an entity
    did not load properly as indicated in the log with routing. We try
    to shutdown a process whos address we get from les ... but there is
    none and things go down hill quickly.

3893.4joining a namespace goes smarterZUR01::SCHNEIDERKurt Schneider, SW-Support ZurichFri Feb 28 1997 04:44481
    Thanks for your replies,

    In the meantime I tried the steps mentioned in note 3879.0 and did
    some more installations.

    	The main problem is to create a primary DNS-server with a new
    namespace. Because I used to build a new namespace with NET$CONFIGURE
    I could not figure out the steps required to avoid a CDI-flush of its
    own name. As John Weir mentioned options 1 and 2 do this and without
    them you don't get any further. In case anybody has figured out how
    a Non-DNS-Expert will be successful to create an initial namespace
    on a DECnet/OSI V6.3-ECO06 system we would be very interessted to know.
    My workaround to this is to install DECnet/OSI V6.3 again (removes
    ECO6) and create the initial namespace with NET$CONFIGURE option 1.
    After that I upgraded the primary DNS-server to DECnet/OSI V6.3-ECO05
    and DNS ECO 70. May be I try ECO 6 again later on my primary DNS
    server, but first of all I'd like to do some DNS-server failover tests.

    	With my secondary server I tried to follow Johns note 3879.0
    means to avoid NET$CONFIGURE option 1 or 2.

    The following steps were required,

    1. Install DECnet/OSI V6.3-ECO06 with DNS-Server and DECdns ECO 70.

    2. Reboot after defining CDI_CACHE_TTL to be 5184000 (in SYLOGICALS.COM)

    3. Configure DECnet with NET$CONFIGURE option 1 and
       specified "* Naming cache timeout value? [30-00:00:00] : 60-00:00:00"
       For some reason the existing namespace was not shown up, so it could
       not be accessed. See attached log.

    4. Now I deleted the following files after shutting down DECnet,

       sys$sysdevice:[dns$server]*.*.*
       sys$system:dns$cache.*.*
       sys$share:dns$ns_*.dat.
       sys$system:dns_*.dat.

    	- as the next step I executed DNS$CONFIGURE option 3, but this
    	  was a bad idea, I've got the following in SYS$SYSDEVICE:[DNS$SERVER]
    	  BARTOK_CH.CHECKPOINT0000000002;1     BARTOK_CH.TLOG0000000002;1
          BARTOK_CH.VERSION;1 DNS$SERVER.DMP;1 VM_DATA.;1
    	  so I repeated 4) again.

    5. Halt the CPU and reboot (to avoid writeback of DNS-clerk-cache)

    6. Execute DNS$CONFIGURE option 3 and it worked just fine.

    	If the CDI-cache entry of the DNS server's own node-name will
    not flush we are save as it turns out.

    Q: Is this going to be changed in a future DECnet/OSI ECO ?

    re .2

    	I needed so many attempts in order to find out what was wrong
    that I did not always reboot, but the main problem was the same if
    the DNS server was down.

    re .3

    	I don't understand those LES events either because they appeared
    after reboot... may be because my NET$CONFIGURE option 1 was not
    completed before. After that many experimental reboots I can't remember
    the conditions.

    Regards
    Kurt

3893.5Anyone should be able to create a DECdns serverBULEAN::TAYLORMon Mar 03 1997 21:4818
    Hi Kurt,

    John has opened an IPMT on the CDI cache problem
    with the local name on a DECdns server. We are
    actively working on resolving this as soon as
    possible.

    In the mean time, if you have a running DECdns
    sever with the CDI cache entries intact, then
    making a backup copy of the sys$specific: [sysexe]
    DECnet_cdi_cache.dat;1 file saves some steps
    if the servers own CDI cache entry is deleted.
    CDI only reads version 1 of this file at boot time.

    Cheers,

    Pat
