3884.0. "DECnet V7.1 hangs after disconn. and reconn. FDDI port" by STU03::RUEGGEN () Fri Feb 21 1997 11:07

    Hello,

an Alpha running DECnet/OSI V7.1 is dual homed to two
DECConcentrator900FH. The interface is a DEFPA. When disconnecting the
B-Port the sytem fails over properly. When disconnecting the A-Port in
addition to this (system is totally disconnected) and reconnecting
either one or both ports, DECnet hangs (no login possible after this
either). This happens to LAT too. UCX is
running without any problems. This behaviour is reproducable at will.
When the above mentioned situation exists I can Telnet to this machine
and get DECnet working again with the following commands:
    MC NCL
    NCL> disable routing circuit fddi-0
    NCL> enable routing circuit fddi-0

DECnet runs O.K. again after this. LAT starts running again after the
    disable command.

I can't remember seeing this with earlier DECnet Versions.

Is this a known behaviour ?

3884.1May not be a DECnet problem...STEVMS::PETTENGILLmulpThu Feb 27 1997 00:0915
There are several modules that are part of VMS because they are linked to
the LAN drivers. Like NET$FDDI and NET$CSMACD. It is my sense that something
broke with VMS when the lan modules were updated to include ATM elan support.

I thought that the problem had been fixed in one of the later baselevels of
VMS, but I never had time to verify it myself and to make sure that VMS revenue
did in fact decline according to plan, funding to VMS was cut which reduced
the testing resources, so this may have slipped thru the cracks.

The good news is that the corporation exceeded the plan leading to a loss in Q1
and a very small profit in Q2. Bob Palmer, et al, are working up to saying that
we can't afford to have VMS revenue go down, but they apparently don't want to
be polically incorrect, so they are slowly working up to it.
vms is important, but it can't shoot up the charts with a bullet so
don't waste your time on it, but it is important since it pays my bonus.

From my experience its easily reproduced of you configure a system with
multiple FDDI adapters, whether its a VAX or Alpha, and then push/pull the
FDDI adapter a few times. I don't have a system readily at hand to try it
at the moment, otherwise I'd check it out.
